Forum Update - September 24, 2010 - Karma/Ad-related (Updated again September 27, 2010)

Friday, September 24, 2010 by GunslingerBara | Discussion: Forum Issues

I pushed a forum update today that has the following changes:

1. Disabled the ads on the WinCustomize forums to try and prevent the "Malware Detection" problems for Chrome and Firefox.

2. Karma is now universal across all sites.  This means that the karma number you now see in each post will be the same across all of the forums, and that giving someone karma means they will get it everywhere.  Let me know if you notice any issues with it.

3. Updated some of our back-end moderation tools.

4. Minor bug fixes.

I haven't heard of anyone else having this issue and I am unable to replicate it on my end.  I am learning towards this being something on your end.

Can you try logging into the forums on a completely different machine using IE8/9 and see if the issue still appears?  I doubt it has anything to do with your account but we can verify it this way.

Neat.  Thanks.  Hope the script errors I get will be gone too, but I'll be just as happy with one fix if not.

Do the script errors provide any details as to where the error is occurring or what the error is?  If you can provide me that information I can take a look.

If you received karma in a forum that was only on one site, only that sites karma would change for your account.  If I simply added your karma for both sites, it would have been inaccurate because I'd be double-counting.  Instead, I recalculated it on a per-forum basis, so that's the reason your karma looks like it went down.  In reality, it's the same as it was before, just in different way

Not that i care but my karma have drop a lot, almost halved... and i have only post in one forum, the sins forum... so there was no karma coming from other site...

Besides the number, did any actual karma disappear from your karma page?

As I mentioned earlier, it's 'Sd.Menus.Menu is null or not an object'...I don't have the error code handy yet but when it happens again I'll get that to you (since I installed the IE9 beta they've been coming up completely blank sometimes too, heh.)  I think the code was 631, but I'd rather have it in front of me than go from memory.

it pops up with basically every picture on the forum page when it happens

Yes, the "users" number is actually a count of how many times you have received/given karma.  It's a bit confusing.  I think I'll just reword it to say "User has given 13 karma 5 times" or something.

I've tried to recreate the issue but am unable to.  I'm not really sure what could be causing the issue.  I assume you're running Windows 7?  Are you running 32- or 64-bit?  Do you have any apps that are installed on all the machines you are having this problem that you feel may be the cause?

I do run cFosSpeed on them all, which may or may not be having an effect, Win7 x64.

I would more suspect my 3g connection/modem causing problems, but it could be a combination of the two.

I don't have enough resources available to test since this is the only ISP I have access too, but I can try without cFosSpeed.

Not that, let me run a few other scenarios before I give up and point at the modem/ISP

Yeah I got nothing, can't make it go away.  It's vastly reduced if I use my Cradlepoint router, though I have no idea why (heck, when it comes to the EC168, they're probably the only ones who DO know all that's wrong with it)

It's a strange issue, as Javascript shouldn't just break randomly in certain situations.  Is your computer fairly modern and fast?  Have you tried running anti-spyware anti-virus?  Do you have any toolbars or addons/extensions to the browser itself?

Core i7 with 6 gigs of RAM, 4850, PCI Express X-Fi, RAIDed 1TB HDs, have had MS Security Essentials on since the box was set up, Bing toolbar is a recent addition just for the hell of it but usually I don't use them...VC#2008 Express, VC#2010 Express, Office 2010 64 bit Standard and that sums it up for the most part (I'm learning on 2008 so I can't get rid of it yet, unfortunately)

Fairly fresh install since I just did the RAID crap cause I was sick of waiting for SSD prices to come down

Yea, I don't see anything there that could be causing problems... I'm honestly at a loss as to what could be causing your problems.
