litestep messed up my computer

Sunday, June 24, 2001 by atomicbaby | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Well, here's my situation...i sucessfully installed litestep on my computer (win98) and it worked fine, then i ran a theme (i don't remember which one) and then it ran an illegal error. so i had to restart the computer because there was no litestep and no windows and when i restarted, a warning message pops up that says:

----------------------------
You are currently running another shell, while Litestep b24 allows you to run under Explorer, we don't advise it for inexperienced users, and we will not support it, so do so at your own risk.

If you continue, some of the advanced features of Litestep will be disabled such as the desktop. The wharf, hotkeys, and shortcuts will still work.

To get rid of this message next time, put LSNoShellWarning in your step.rc

Continue?

(yes) (no)
------------------------------

I tried clicking on both yes and no but after that all that shows is a solid color background and my pointer. i know i can fix this by opening system.ini in the windows folder and changing the shell parameter but i can't access it because i can't input any commands! PLEASE help me out here!

OK...looks like some fun path corruption and probably incompatable modules as well....

What to do?
Exit windows to dos prompt.
Type at the prompt...

cd c:\windows [enter]
edit system.ini [enter]

[then change the 'shell=' line in the [boot] section to read...]
shell=explorer.exe

[save, and reboot.]

Be careful with LiteSTEP...it can trip up the hasty...any probs...ICQ me on 59227163...

Remember.....RTFM...

And if you can't reboot to DOS, try accessing it while booting. Boot your machine and as soon as you see the message "Starting Windows98..." press f8 (or if you don't have fast reflexes, just hold Ctrl while booting). You should end up in the Win98 strtup menu, where you can boot to DOS.

Alternatively, you can use your startup disk (yes, that thing you should've made but never bothered to actually make) and boot into DOS that way.

Then perform the steps Jafo mentioned and you're home free.

The documentation team has been working on it for 2.5 years.
