IE & OE On Some Skins Not In Exact Same Location When Changing From One To The Other????

Tuesday, February 17, 2004 by Hochie | Discussion: Skinning

I have my windows on XP maximized...yet on some skins when I switch from OE to IE and back the windows shift slightly.....yet on others they will stay in exactly the same place....(which in my opinion they should)....is there is a place in these skins where this setting can be changed to make them the same???? And if so where do I find it...this an annoyance more than a real problem (but I guess I'm too much of a perfectionist)

Just a guess, but what your seeing is probably caused by the differences in the frames and such stuff. I doubt there's much you can do about it.

Thanks Koasati....thankfully it doesn't happen in Sportsman Skin...

I don't know if it's related, but with the skin I'm doing I've set it to crop as much as I can from the frames when the windows are maximized, and I just noticed that Outlook and IE interpret this differently. Outlook honours what the skin tells it to crop, where as IE is always displaying the whole window frame. This means the window contents shifts slightly when I toggle between them - but the contents of each stay in the same place.

Hochie - in that case, if you open the Skin you might wish to use in SkinStudio, and modify the MaxBorderCut settings to zero and you might solve it ?

Where would I find this Sput? Looked thru (I thought) almost every item in some skins and couldn't find anything like MaxBorderCut....what would this be under?

Oh...sorry, that's what it's called in the code bit...

If you click on the relevant window frame portion when previewing the windows, then in the right tree it should be listed as "Screen Edge Clip - Top/Left/Right/Bottom"

Still not sure I understand where it is....is there only one setting I have to change or are there more? Which would be the relative frame portion for what I am talking about...? Top or Right???

Is it Frame Image Top? And then set the Right and Left to 0? Think that might be it if I am understanding you correctly.....thanks for your help so far....

Hochie - assuming the effect is due to the settings I think it is, then I would expect only the top one to make a difference.

Click on the top of the window frame, and then adjust the setting on the right called "Screen Edge Clip Top". Remember what it's set to initially, and then set it to zero and see if that solves it.

There are similar settings for the left, right and bottom frame elements but I would expect the left and right probably cancel out to leave the button in the same place that Windows expects...the bottom one would be the only other I'd try changing.

If this doesn't work then it's back to the drawing board....

Once again I can not find "Screen Edge Clip" unless I am using an older version of SkinStudio...

Ahhh...could be. I'm running 4.1.0 build 868.

Just to be sure, here's where I mean:

Hopefully, you can see the highlighted option on the right?

It may not be the same if it's not a Uis2 skin, or possibly for other reasons...in which case, if you go to the code view, find the Personality setting near the start somewhere, and look for the settings:

MaxBorderCutLeft=x1

MaxBorderCutRight=x2

MaxBorderCutTop=y1

MaxBorderCutBottom=y2

and change them there...

OK...I know the answer to this now...sort of. For a different thread, I went and checked the stardock newsgroups, and someone there had reported similar problems. Apparently, plugings in IE seem to prevent it from honouring the clipping of the window frame off the screen when maximized.

I've just confirmed this myself as the Google bar I had installed was making IE misbehave, and when I turned that off and re-started IE it works as it should. Apparently Java has the same effect, so visiting a page which uses it (if you have it installed of course) will start IE acting incorrectly too (though I've not verified this myself). The implication is that any IE plugings seem to break WindowBlinds making it crop the window frames off the screen.

Try it and see if it works for you rather than my previous advice. And as an aside, if you currently use the google bar and don't want to be without it, check out their "labs" page and see if the goodle deskbar will work even better...I'm a convert to this new way of using google...

I don't want to burst your bubble but I don't believe that is the answer...have never had a problem until about a week ago....and yes I do have the "Google ToolBar" and Java installed.....they all worked fine....don't know what might have changed but it may have been when I reset my screen resolution from 1064x768 to 1152x864....not sure...I had to resize the windows to the new screen size...although some of the skins work fine and don't have this problem....some do have the problem....hopefully we will get it figured out eventually...

I dunno then. Turning off the google bar fixed the behaviour for me though, so maybe there was a WB version upgrade in there affecting things too or something, or maybe a change in the way IE deals with plugins?

BTW - I'd recommend trying the google deskbar anyhow...everyone who I've refered it to so far has become a convert as it has some cool tricks up it's sleve http://toolbar.google.com/deskbar/index.html

Besides trying turning of the google bar and tweaking the settings, I'll have to defer to someone else for any other suggestions.
