WinCustomize Wallpaper Survey

Wednesday, August 11, 2010 by Island Dog | Discussion: WinCustomize News

I’m doing some research for WinCustomize and I have created a quick survey about wallpapers and WinCustomize.  I would appreciate it if WC members could take a moment and fill it out.  It will help us get a better picture on how to develop the future of WinCustomize.

It would be nice to know exactly what folks want and don't want and is a fractal always a fractal?

Anything other than fractals. What I look for in a wallpaper are nature scenes...city scapes....landscapes...architecture...anything real life.  Fractals are just that....fractals. They are "sometimes" ok to look at but not very usable as a wallpaper. I see them as more of an art form of sorts but never as wallpaper for a desktop.

Done.  And I agree about fractals.  They are the new Brittney, Dolphin crap of the wallpaper world.  Down with fractals!  DOWN I SAY DAMMIT!

I do so get tired of the fractal bashing, obviously some people like them or my downloads tell a lie. All I was trying to say is all fractals are not created equally. I am, however, trying to delve into other areas and it's helpful to know what the majority wants and likes. Thanks for the input.

Never fails?  Have you read the Personal Page Elite thread?  "Skin for you" may be the best policy but it DOES fail, and I have 3 of my most personally cherished wallpapers my personal gallery to prove it.

Frankief...Wasn't really bashing your work...it was a survey about wallpapers and I was referring to a type of wallpaper...not anyone in particular. Some of the stuff you do looks really good...it's just not something I would use on my desktop. Hell, even some of the stuff I do use doesn't stay on my desktop for to long. So don't take it personally...create for the reasons you want to and don't worry about everyone else. Someone will like what you do and use it.

Oh...and there are lots of other types of wallpapers I don't like...it just so happens that fractals are in abundance in the wallpaper gallery here...more so than anywhere else I look for walls.

That makes no sense whatsoever.

How does your wall getting PPd prove that "skinning for you" fails. You did the wall, you like it, the mods didn't. If you were skinning for you, then you wouldn't care.

Done! To expand on the 'multi-monitor' aspect, listing in the wallpaper description all the included resolutions should be standard parctice.

It FAILED to make it into the public.  I consider that failing, and apparently so do the moderators or it would have made it to the public gallery.  I'm not hurt, I'm not crushed, it doesn't ruin my day, but I do get disappointed when it happens.  WC isn't the special olympics, and when something doesn't make it to the public gallery it's a FAIL!  To say it isn't, is just being politically correct, which isn't honest.

From upload guidelines for walls

Our guidelines for judging wallpapers on aesthetic grounds are difficult to be specific about. The prime directive for wallpapers is that they must WORK as a wallpaper, in other words the design should be an effective desktop background, which includes: The background is not too busy and icons are easy to see against it, Colors are not too bright to be distracting, and colors work well together. There are many subjective design related preferences we all have and some objective qualifications as well, such as the quality of the rendering and the resolution size offered. And then there is the composition, the subject matter, the overall balance of the design, etc.

Which means a uploaded image could be fantastic as a piece of Art, but not work well as a desktop background; in a case as this the only fail would be not usable as a wall, not the art/image itself.

If you only see one fractal in your life you'll think it's fantastic.

Unfortunately, you can put the emphasis on different parts of that sentence and mean different things....and be correct with each....

If any type of wall plainly demostrates its created mechanism then it will always be 'ho hum' at best, boring at worst.

Like a photo of a flower....anyone can take one.  What may separate/distinguish one flower photo from another is "wow...that depth of field combined with the backlighting and gleam on the raindrops is inspired".  If it's JUST-ANOTHER-FLOWER-SNAP then expect it to be relegated to 'ho hum' status.

I remember seeing my first fractal....thought it was AMAZING.  That was last century....actually last millennium.

Of course, there will always be people here for whom their 'first fractal' is here and now....which is why they [fractals, or any other specific 'style'] are not summarily rejected....

Thanks Jafo (I think) I am not offended by anything anyone has said, I am just saying you cannot lump sum anything, some fractal artists create unique and original stuff that is truly a delight to behold and some of it is just hoo hum, been there, done that. Amazingly, believe it or not, I am not a big fan of fractals per se but I do enjoy dinking around with Apo and trying to come up with new stuff that is not too busy to be used as a wall if you so desire. Since I lost my job back in January, I have been trying to learn more about how to do other types of work and funny you should use the flower as an example because my latest experiment is with a flower, yes, a real flower, not an Apo flower. Look for it in a gallery near you in the very near future!

Still no fail. If you have fans, and I'm certain you do, they'll check your gallery every so often. They'll still get them, rest assured.

Pardon me for disagreeing but no,I don't believe it is. The way I see it, it succeeded at a different level.
