Odd .tga behavior on start menu

I thought you couldnt use .tga on the start menu ,but I noticed in the lates beta of SS there was a check box for translucent.So out of curiosity I tried it.It did work ,sort of.Where the image was truly transparent it worked fine but any pixels between fully trans an fully opaque were black.
any suggestions here?
which brings me to another question...how does win 98 handle all those .tga buttons and such? Wouldnt they look terrible?

not the start button,the start menu,...specifically the user pane.It has a curved edge.Alias hell.So I tried an antialiased .tga.It kinda worked except for the black pixels where the image was not completely transparent.

have you seen any good tutorials for smothing an aliased edge against a contrasting background.
For this one I left antialiasing on and filled with magic pink behind then replaced the color of the individual pixels that had the pinkish tint .
worked pretty well but there has to be an easier way.

Oh, btw, if you are using photoshop, just draw the circle with antialaising off, looks a bit pixelated but hey, even the skins factory's stuff has that

I have a quick method I use to do that.
One day I'll get round to doing a short tut on it, and putting it on Skinplant.
I'll try and come up with something temporarily this week and put it up.

Thanks Hippy....styl that was totally unacceptable,looked BAD.The method I used worked but was unwieldly.
The advantage to starting with an antialiased edge was mainly on the inside of the edge.At least it was pretty smooth.
Then corrective pixel pushing on the pinkies fixed the outer edge.Still wasnt perfect but was way better than no antialiasing.

click on my user name if you want to see how it turned out.The edge would have been much worse if I hadnt started with an antialiased edge.
