Request opinions on MDI buttons

Monday, September 29, 2003 by bordfryr | Discussion: Skinning

I am currently working on a skin that I am considering using large round MDI buttons. About 1 1/2 times the size of the Windows Luna buttons. I have noticed that a lot of skins have very small buttons which I find unhandy. They would be plain in the normal state and show a graphic of some sort in the mouseover state. Thanks for your input.

well reason them being small, is they can only be one size for them to work correctly, 180x15 pix otherwise they will get crushed or streched.

Not so. I have already made them larger. Of course I had to double the height of the top bar. They work quite well, but I was wondering how they would be accepted by the "general population" here.

Do you mean you made the menu bar double height? That is where the MDI buttons appear. I didn't think that was possible either. I'd like to see a screenshot.

I don't see any MDI buttons in that screenshot........... just huge Titlebar buttons.

I personally hate teeny tiny titlebar buttons.Fitts law states an interfaces usability is directly influenced by how much effort is required to access any function,so bigger is better...to a point.

I have a question about the MDI mouseovers & states. The mouseovers look great in the Skinstudio preview box but do not work in the menubar in Skinstudio or most other programs. I also have the problem where the pressed state "sticks" after the button is used the first time. (the button still works)
Any ideas, comments??

Forgot one, The close button seems to have more space between it and the max button than there is between the max-min buttons. I've looked for some way to modify their locations but so far no luck.

essorant has a couple of skins with larger titlebar buttons (well they range from small to large)

that I always thought looked very good. I don't particularly like the teeny ones because they are so hard to hit.
