Favorites unreadable in a lot of skins

Friday, September 26, 2003 by David Bird | Discussion: Skinning

There are lots of nice skins produced but a lot of them get the thumbs down from me for just one reason - the Favorites "menu" is unreadable compared to the other menus. What you usually get is item text in black on a light background which is readable and then when the highlight bar is applied the text stays black instead of turning a light colour like normal menus do.

Yes I know that the Favorites "menu" isn't a real menu which is why I've tried to be careful with the way I'm writing this message.

I also know that some skinners have cracked the problem and its their skins I use the most.

So what is the secret to getting a readable Favorites "menu" ?

Thanks in advance.

There is no secret. The text on the Favorites menu is always black and there's nothing skinners can do about it. The only way to make it readable all the time is to use a light colored menu background and a light colored menu highlight background.

Hmmm how strange. The skin I'm currently working on most definitely has white text on the favourites menu

It depends on which favorites menu you look at. The favorites menu on the start menu does respect menu text color settings. The favorites menu on the IE toolbar is always black, however.

I don't seem to have a problem changing the text color in IE favorites either

Hmm, could be that I just always use black menu text, so I never noticed if the normal state changes or not.

Sounds like a tip for the skinning guide.
Mike, your 'Colony' skin was one of the primary skins that convinced me to start skinning.Thank you!
