Dashboard vs. Konfabulator controversy continued...
Sunday, July 25, 2004 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News
For PC users, what's going on in the Mac world is of little interest. But there is a controversy going on over the latest MacOS X announcement. It includes a DesktopX-like feature called Dashboard which seems brazenly borrowed from the MacOS program called Konfabulator.
I've written a new article that talks about that and how they all compare to DesktopX which many of you use. You can read it at the link below...

For me, the main issue is one of hypocrisy, not "stealing".
ALL companies are influenced by others. It's all part of capitalism.  However, Apple has tended to take the attitude that they are uniquely innovative and seem quick to accuse others of "stealing" their ideas.

Well the nice thing about owning the site is that we get to talk about the things that interest us. But more to the point, the more people who are aware of this stuff, the less of a pain in the butt we're collectively going to have to go through when Tiger gets released and the Mac zealots start fanning out over the Internet accusing Windows programs of ripping off Apple.
Mark my words: You will see Mac users claiming that programs like DesktopX, Samurize, etc. are rip offs of Dashboard.

First, off, he's not exiled (despite his title). You can click on his profile just as easy as I can.
Second, let me be clear: I own the site. So if I choose to write topic after topic about llama herding or my various emu farms I'll do so.  No one forces anyone else to read it if they're not interested.

Well I'm certainly sorry that you consider my publicizing the plight of some small developer on another platform to be "whining".
If there was a company that was going around and selling skins that were knock-offs of someone else's skins and it was blatant, I would "whine" about that too.
This issue may be dull or irrelevant to skinners, but it's not to software developers on any platform. And if you don't like it, you don't have to read it.  I am not trying to win some "respect" contest.  I think it is interesting, I enjoy writing about it, and I think it's the right thing to do.
And I want it also pointed out, as if it weren't obvious: I don't have a personal stake in it. I just think it's something people should know about. Just because YOU know about it doesn't mean "everyone" knows about it.  This site gets 2.8 million unique visitors each month.  You think they follow this kind of stuff? Of course not.
You don't like it or think it's boring or been covered, fine, don't read it.

The whole industry is a pissing contest to see who can piss the farthest, right now it's Apple. So come on Konfabulator, show us what you've got.
I also think they could have handled the whole Dashboard thing a little better, instead of moaning and groaning about how "evil" mac is, and "you are killing the guys who help you out". But then again, they most likely did it for PR, what better PR then to go against the mighty blue Apple.
Sorry, but this whole discussion sickens me.
