Getting Faster Again?

Monday, December 15, 2003 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News

As some of you know, WinCustomize experienced the catastrophic hardware failure of TWO main servers in the past month. The net result was that WinCustomize had to be moved to some of Stardock's other servers which slowed down all of Stardock's sites as well as WinCustomize's.

While Stardock pays for most of WinCustomize's costs in exchange for hosting and promoting skins and themes for its software, WinCustomize still has to pay for some of its bandwidth as well as hardware.

Anyone who's familiar with Internet servers knows you can't just buy a PC and throw it up there. Servers for sites such as WinCustomize (which gets over 2 million unique users per month visiting) are very expensive.

Which is why we're running a subscription drive. We need to get a minimum of 500 new subscriptions this month.  We're at 333 right now but it's slowing down. We need your help. WinCustomize subscriptions offer many benefits including access to a couple of premium WC suites, the WinCustomize browser, unlimited downloads, prioritized bandwidth, and many new goodies coming out this Spring/Summer.

You can purchase a subscription for $20 which lasts two years. That money goes directly to help keep the site running. See the link at the bottom to purchase.

But since we have 333, we were able to purchase and already implement one new server which hopefully you can already see a dramatic improvement in site speed.  Check out the libraries and compare how much faster it is to surf this site.  Our next server will be designed to provide more redundancy so that we don't experience down times due to hardware failures.  There is still much to be done but hopefully you can now see the benefits provided by a new server thanks to WinCustomize subscribers!

unbelievable that you cant get 500 out of 2 million. If we already have a subscription, will it stack? Or can we just donate $20?

Frogboy,
On Dec 5 I upgraded my subscription. My date in the registration still shows the old date (May 2004) I sent a email and still have not gotten no response from the support dept. If you have any contacts could you ask them to look into my account so my subscription will update to a newer date/year. It has been more than 2 working days and still nothing heard from them. Thanks

They're working on that.  That particular question falls through the holes between WC/SD. But don't worry, it will get taken care of.

YES!

It does seem faster and that makes all the difference in the world! Come on everyone, support the best place to get the skins that make work, or play, just that much more fun!

Cheers to all who've subscribed to this point, and this includes the ones before the drive! And thanks to all who are thinking about it! Come on! Let's keep this site running!

Would be nice if I could actually do it :rolleyes:The payment system won't accept my billing info This happens every year when I renew OD as well I end up having to call Stardock and process the friggin order manually.

And not to be too fussy , but Stardock is the ONLY online retailer I've used that has this problem.

My Visa Bankcard works fine. I renewed MY ODNT subscription yesterday, AND bought a WC subscription. For anyone who hasn't bought a WC subscription, I highly recommend doing so. $20 for 2 years. I spend more than that at friggin' McDonalds!

Plus you get the WC Browser which REALLY saves time and effort getting skins and stuff. So really it's a win/win. You get skins, and WC gets new servers to keep the bandwidth up.

$20 bones. A mere $20. That's a deal in of itself.
