I read recently that one of the "praises" of HTML5 is that it would remove the need for video add-ons, such as "flash". I guess that means that with html5 the video code is embedded within the program. the question; I wonder if you can still turn the video content off in order not to play those obnoxious video advertisements. I think the new FF is HTML5 based, maybe a couple of you would respond.

I do not know to whom the rest of your text is pointed at, but for this bit, it will depend on the implementation of your browser. They may not allow for it. In fact, with the absence of flash, it might get a lot harder to weed out those obnoxious "flashy" bits of websites, since they'll be using SVG and .pngs, and those may or may not be critical parts of the site. Ouch.

Lifehacker has several articles that go over html5. The most recent is on a site that has an interactive chart detailing which browsers have features compatible to html5.

The HTML5 Readiness Chart Highlights How Well Your Browser Handles the Future

I really, really hope that making a flash background will be as easy as

Code: html
  1. <body background = "background.swf">

Wow, that looked like a shout out. I feel almost obligated to pop-in here now.. I simply found where the javascript was barfing, however I think I also said numerous times in the previous discussion that Flash had NOTHING to do with the problem you were experiencing with the ratings. It was poorly written javascript, and nothing more. The only blame Flash has in the whole situation is that the javascript was checking for the existence of the Flash plug-in. I'm no fan of flash either but if we're going to play the blame game let's at least be accurate.

As for filtering flash-like content out in HTML5 I can't imagine it will be any more difficult than it is now. Most utilities like NoScript embed themselves in the browser and intercept the content of the page before it is completely rendered, removing the pieces that the user has decided they don't want. If setting a Flash BG is as easy as Splitshadow hopes, removing it will be as simple as removing the background.swf from the background tag.

HTML5 video is still a ways off from a done deal; last I'd seen there was still no consensus as to what codec it should use. Either way it'll still be trivial to block with tools like adblock or greasemonkey.

No. Just... no.

Kevin, I think you did a great job bird dogging the problem. YES, I hear you when you say that flash was not the problem however whatever it was (still don't quite understand it all but then again it's not my area of expertise) was requiring me to "enable" flash to fully enjoy this site and that's not okay. So, from my little perspective, it was all about flash cause the other stuff is over my head and I was dealing with the end result not what was making it happen, that's where you came in. Not the staff who were busy putting out many other fires and they were also fairly dismissive about this issue. Their solution was to leave flash enabled, my solution was going to be leaving WC, I'm extreamly happy not to have made the choice before the evidence was presented.

to be honest, I was on my last check to see if the problem was corrected, if not, WC was off my favorites. So, I really don't know if your solution worked out or not but the issue appears to be resolved. AND IF YOUR INPUT HELPED TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE IT SHOULD BE ACKNOWLEDGED.
