Longhorn sidebar now? Get DesktopX

Wednesday, October 29, 2003 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News

This week at PDC Microsoft is showing off technologies that will make up the next version of Windows. Don't want to wait to have some of that stuff? Download DesktopX 2 which came out today.

DesktopX 2 comes with a Longhorn-like sidebar that has meters, virtual desktops, and all kinds of other features that also happens to look incredibly sleak.

Want high DPI desktop visuals right now? DesktopX lets you have objects and icons of any size on your desktop today with full dynamic alpha blending and hardware acceleration. If you have an nVidia or ATI card, DesktopX can take full advantage of them to give you real time shadowing of objects.

And best of all, DesktopX 2 is a free download. The full version is available as part of Object Desktop. Or you can purchase it on its own for $19.95. Sales of DesktopX also help pay for WinCustomize.com.

And as if that's not enough, check out the thousands of cool DesktopX objects that are here on WinCustomize:

 DesktopX Objects

 DesktopX Themes

And if you're a developer, DesktopX already supports Windows scripting host today and soon will support XAML, C# and more making it possible to create objects that will work on Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, and Longhorn.

Ahhh you guys heard of XAML? I just read about that a few days ago.

And C# too? I'm not a C# fan but I guess that is cool.

I am already impressed by the VB and C++ abilities. You can technically make a running program inside DX. I could make my own browser.. sort of. I already have neat ideas but I am just waiting for my new computer... it will be a while too.

Un-smurfy indeed.

It's an iTunes skin I made. Can't distribute though as I ripped most of it from other sources.

omg TEASE... seriously though. Their isn't a single good windowblinds skin on this site with right buttons and a consistant brushed metal look. Lots of attempts, but nothing perfect. Sigh if I only has skinning skills.

Frogboy,
You TEASE! That bar has all the function I have been looking for without a bunch of things I don't use. It's perfect : sigh :

the left bar comes with desktop X, called 'longhorn dock'. What i was asking about was the window theme with the brushed metal.

any chance on the wallpaper in the aquarium? My kids love DX2 and all the fish swimming around. Not to mention the fact that we just took them to see that new Disney movie thats out now. It would be great to know where that is?
