No thumbnail on OD dock for Adobe PDF document
Friday, April 30, 2010 by Benjamin Cowgill | Discussion: Object Desktop
When I drag other types of documents onto an ObjectDock dock (e.g., Word and Excel documents), I get a nice thumbnail that serves as a shortcut to the document.
The same used to be true of Adobe Acrobat (PDF) documents. They still drag and drop onto the dock just fine, but I don't get a thumbnail. Instead, I get a black square where the thumbnail should be, as if ObjectDock is having trouble generating a thumbnail.
This is true even though I do see a thumbnail of the PDF document within Vista Explorer.
I'd really like to be able to fix this, because the thumbnails are very helpful. I use one of my docks for quick shortcuts to various documents I am using in my work (Word, Excel, PDF, etc.), and it helps to have thumbnails on the dock.
Can anyone help? Thanks!

Shirley, I'm using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.1 for my PDF files, running in Vista with ObjectDock 1.9 Plus. I didn't know there was an OD 2.

Yeah, the v2 upgrade is available now (in Beta). Can you take a screenshot of what you're seeing? Also, if you right click and select Dock Entry Properties and then Reset Image does it fix the issue?

I installed v2, which is very nice, but that hasn't fixed the problem with PDF thumbnails on docks. The default image when I drag a PDF onto the dock is just a black square filling the space where an icon should be. Resetting the image has no effect.
I use a document management program called PaperPort, which may have a special driver for viewing PDF thumbnails within that program. It doesn't affect PDF thumbnails in Windows explorer, but do you think it could be interfering with the creation of thumbnails on an OD dock?

If these are only generated in the app, then most likely this is not the issue, unless this app is set to open PDFs on your system, which may interfere with thumbnail generation.

Howdy,
I have the same problem. I have always had this problem, and I have just updated to v2 and it continues.
- OS Windows 7
- Object Dock v2 Beta
- Tabbed Docks & Normal Docks
- I only get a black square
- Acrobat Reader 9 and Pro 8 both do it.
- Normally the image is the first page of the file.
Thanks for your help.

What version of Reader is this with and on what OS? Also, are you using ObjectDock 2?
