Download numbers missing
Sunday, April 18, 2010 by PixelPunk | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
I want to see download numbers for all the Master skins. They should be published just like all the other skins here on Wincustomize. A really good judge of the skin quality can be made on the number of downloads. I would think most skin authors/creators with good skins would like to advertise this.

Not sure that this would be good or even happen. With regular skins I think it is okay.
You know what the Master Skin costs, if you also had the download numbers you would then have how much the skinner has received in revenue from that skin. You don't need that information, as a user or customer, for any reason.
I understand what you are saying, you would like some way of telling if the skin you are looking at is popular or liked by the community. Is it of a quality that you wouldn't mind paying for it. I don't know how you do that with Master Skins other than reviewing it's download page, looking at the screenshot, which you can zoom in on and reading the comments. You can also go to the skinners personal gallery and look at their collective works.
Here is something else to think about, on regular skins people will download them and may decided that the skin isn't to their liking and uninstall it. Their download though is still reflected in the total.

I don't think it should matter one way or the other. It's not like anyone is going to become a millionaire selling skins. But hey...wait a minute...McDonalds has sold over what now....a billion burgers....hmmmm...Nah...that's just plain silly! Then again...I'll bet that Mike Bryant guy is just sitting around his luxury swimming pool doing skins! ![]()

PixelPunk:
1. Quantity is not a measure of Quality.
2. Quality is entirely subjective.
3. You don't know (and won't) because you don't know what percentage of the sale Stardock receives.
4. How much a skinner "makes" is none of your business, however, vStyler (to all accounts a successful and extremely talented Master Skinner) has often stated that it does not make him enough.
5. Idle curiosity (and it's just that) shouldn't overstep generally accepted boundaries of privacy: i.e. someone else's income.

I am not concerned with how much money is made.
The money has to be generated somehow to pay the bills.
Just curious. As for downloading and uninstalling counting as downloads, I am sure that happens with premium skins too. Especially if they are not quite what was expected. Or the user changes moods.
There are bound to be some skinners around that watch their download numbers and take pride in how many people are using or at least trying out their work.

Yes and no, I have a couple master skins that are not currently installed but they are backed-up and I always have access to download them again from my account page at WC, if I download a normal skin and do not care for it it is deleted and gone forever.
Basing this on Master skinners and their Master skins, since they know their agreement with Stardock, even if they could not have download count they would know by math, how much money divided by how much per skin how many have been purchased, that said I am sure they would have easy access to see how many they have sold.

unless there is a change, the new site does not appear to list the number of downloads of any of the skins?

Not in the main gallery page but when you click to see a specific skin, download totals are on it's page.
