Infogrames dies. Long live Atari

Wednesday, May 7, 2003 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News

The Register is reporting that Infogrames is rebranding itself as Atari. Many of you probably remember Atari from the early 80s. It has come, and died several times since then.

Atari was always that American company that sounded like a Japanese company. Now it's a French company that people may think is an American company that sounds like a Japanese company..

The R in infog(r)ames always bothered me for some reason. No longer will I be subjected to its tyranny. I wonder if they'll crack down on those Atari t-shirts?

I sketched out a design for a new version of Pong today in the conference room.

Alex was not amused.

what kinda name is Infogrames??? Info Games with a 'R'?

So they are buying the Atari name. Better use of the 'R' I would say.

Atari is a French company now? No more Atari games for me.

The "R" always bothered me as well. But buying the Atari rights was a very smart move. Plus, the Atari logo is way sweeter than that lame rainbow coloured armadillo.

Tech Cat, their parent company is in France. They have 65% of their sales/company in the US.

Going to www.infogrames.com *does* redirect you to www.atari.com

By what it says on the page, it appears that the Atari branding is for there North America division.

Livin' the 80's again!

The French company owning Atari might be a blessing. I remember in the 80's the family who owned Atari were killing it. They simply refused to believe that they could do little or nothing and thereby create an empire. They thought word of mouth would make them sales - so no advertising was required, etc. Drove the company - and all it's innovations - into the ground.
