Windows 8? I just got 7.....

Thursday, April 8, 2010 by G3mpi3 | Discussion: Microsoft

Well it appears Microsoft is set on releasing Windows 8 in 2012, and there are already some rumors building. Microsoft starting developing Windows 8 before Windows 7 was released. What could Windows 8 have that Windows 7 doesn't? I wanted to start a thread to hear what everyone has to say about it. Share any information you find as well as your opinions and thoughts.

Here's some of the rumored improvements we might see in Windows 8.

- Windows 8 might have 64 and 128 bit compatibility. It was leaked that Windows 9 will definitely have 128 bit compatiblity, but we'll just ignore any talk about Windows 9 at this point.

-Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) service: A multi-master replication engine set up for folder synchronization across multiple servers. This may be something we will be seeing in Windows 8 Server.

-Major improvements in BranchCache: BranchCache was a new feature developed in Windows 7. Basically when data from an intranet website or file server is accessed, it caches those files locally so the next user can access them more quickly. Major improvements can be expected for BranchCache.

- What else? I'm sure we'll hear more rumors soon.....and I'm sure there's more out there. Post anything you find and I'll add it here.

This is a pretty neat concept video created by a UI team in Copenhagen.

The embedded video is kind of small and depressing but if you click on the link below it "coperhagen user experience" you can see a much larger version with a full screen option.

Since Microsoft is a 'for profit corporation' (don't think their shareholders want to lose money) the only way for them to make money is to keep changing/ugrading/updating their product line.  This isn't anything new with them or any other corporation or company.

New technology is developed and released with one point in mine, to grab the consumer's money.  The consumer will be led to believe that it was all about improving the users experience.  You believe that?

Good point. However, in my opinion I do think Microsoft has a good reputation for making improvements in their OS releases. There's definitely truth in what you are saying, but I would just like to point out that it could be worse.

I have Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit and I like Microsoft OS's.

The argument could me made thought that what else is there to choose from, Mac and Linux and possibly a few other less heard of OS's (are there any?)

I never use the search, why should I when I know where all my files are because of a little thing called organization using folder hierarchy and proper file/folder naming. Wish they wouldn't concentrate so much on the functionality of the search/sort and make the damn OS easier to personalize than just a color change..

Would be nice be able to skin every nook and cranny without having to hack 20 different .DLL's to get a fully customized look!!

Remember the video is just a concept that isn't associated with Microsoft...........we might not see ANY of the things in that video. It's purely an idea / guess. I'm sure we'll see OS improvements that don't have to do with making folders more accessible.........well i hope so.
