A new dark Theme for WinCustomize
First alternative theme for WinCustomize - a skin for our skinning site.
Thursday, February 11, 2010 by zigboom | Discussion: New Releases
Hi
Have you ever wished there would be some alternative themes for our beloved site?
Most likely you did, after all we all love skinning and using alternative themes for our applications.
Not sure if you know already, but there is a way to skin websites, it's called "Stylish" for Firefox.
Stylish is an Add-on for Firefox that let's the user apply various styles to existing websites.
There are many styles (themes) for popular sites such as Google, Facebook etc.
It's one of the coolest Add-ons I know that let you style your web, quite futuristic.
The paradox is, there is no theme for Wincustomize, our beloved site that is one of the biggest skinning communities.
Well, there wasn't until today.
I took the mission to make the first alternative dark theme for WinCustomize and Wincustomize Beta.
It's optimized mostly for the beta site but works on both so when the beta will become the main site it'll work the same.
To use it you'll need to install Stylish add on for Firefox from here - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108
Then to apply the style, just one click on "Install with Stylish" here - http://userstyles.org/styles/25121
Hope you'll enjoy it,
comments are welcome.

I have been using it in beta, I just thought I would let you know it was a bug in the current Wincustomize if you cannot fix it fine.

Good to hear OldMsgt and thanks for the feedback. I'm hardly keeping up with the beta site since it keeps changing all the time. I guess I'll have to focus on it in the near future. I'm wondering how long will we have two sites anyway ... Please let me know any problems with it or any feedback about the style.

Update -
Cleaned the login area, got rid of the dark gray area that got broken somehow.
New download-button, The original one was green and didn't look good with the light text, Now it's glossy black as the other new buttons I made.
Fix for light background on forum pop'up menu (when editing link for example)
I'm happy from the resulting theme, quite a fully skinned alternative to the original design (that was too bright for my eyes).
Please let me know about any problems, the theme is supporting fully only the beta site.
sorry, it's too much work to do also the old site (and it goes down anyway)
Download the theme HERE or update it through Stylish.

i'm happy to see this kind of thing here...great work.
what do you know about themes ,...like winestripe realfox?
that theme almost fixes firefox running windowblinds.
it still dosnt get the fonts right but it uses the blinds tabs.
a few tweaks and it would be great. ![]()

Thanks very much for the feedback I.R. !
I've made few themes for Firefox, latest one is BlackFox V1 which is matching with my WB ( BlackFox [XP] )
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/57531
If you're trying it, please try the userscript that puts a slideshow from space into the empty tabs - http://userstyles.org/styles/24642
About fonts etc, if you use my FF themes with a dark WB, you'll have almost no problems at all (99%).
Just to be on the safe side, I made a userscript that helps with dark Firefox themes in general and makes sure the text is readble.
Here you can find all my userscripts - http://userstyles.org/users/24480
Try the gray textboxes style and see if it helps with un-readble text, works on all sites.
You can also easily change the colors as you like, this one is kind of safe to use, the gray is medium dark and text is light gray.
Let me know how it goes.

Update - This one is quite significant, it took a lot of work to get done.
I re-designed the Quick Reply section that was white in the original (dark) style.
I don't know why it was white, probably another bug or forgotten section in the beta site,
anyway it's fixed now.
By the way, if you're already using Stylish, check out my other UserStyles here - http://userstyles.org/users/24480

Another Update:
I noticed the dark forum style (on the beta site) disappeared so I updated the Theme to include the forums.
I also updated the code so it will work on the current site once it's updated so there won't be any problems when it happens (should be soon).
Next update will be after the transition is made to the new site.
Here's the link to download the Theme (requires Firefox and Stylish) - http://userstyles.org/styles/25121

Thanks for the feedback OldMsgt, I know the style isn't fully compatible with the default WC, it's designed for the beta site mainly. Anyway, I can try to solve it but the problem is I cannot vote anyway (I'm a simple citizen without voting privileges - Never liked it but that's how it goes here). Anyway, I'll look into it. In the meanwhile I'm asking you, why not use the beta site? We'll have to get used to it anyway ... Please give it a try.
EDIT: I looked into it, as I thought, I cannot vote so I just get a message saying so and inviting me to subscribe. Anyway, my Theme doesn't change the position of the download button. You can always rightclick the small Stylish icon in the right/bottom corner of Firefox and "Turn all styles off" while trying to give a rating. I recommend using the beta site, It also loads much faster and anyway, that's the one we'll be using in the near future. Please let me know about any problems.
