mmmm, me want it!
im a perl/cgi developer and at the moment i upload all my files to a remote unix server, its a hassle. The only thing that stops me moving to linux is the fact that i use so many software packages that are only available on windows

of i could figure out linux, i would download it. I dont have the time or a big desire to lern it... But i got it and mess with it from time to time.
Also, Mandrake 8.2 came out. I dont know when, but it has not been long.

mandrake 8.2 has been out for a while, and redhat 7.3 just came out...... personally, i absolutely cannot wait for the new gnome release... i''ve never been a big fan of kde, always liked gnome better.... gnome + sawfish = happy capn
Sawfish is the default window manager for gnome and it really does perform very well in terms of skinning capability.

Actually linux can run most windows apps using wine (windows emulator). So no worries about that 
It also has koffice (.org) which seems to be very functional.

actually KDE is the ugliest of all UNIX/Linux desktops. it really can´t compete on speed with BlackBox or FluxBox or on beauty with Enlightenment. KDE is the "Windows" of the UNIX/Linux community.

Except that even K can be made to look very nice. (just have to run screaming from the default themes).
E17 is shaping up to be very cool. I''ve played with it a few times so far. It''s not my regular desktop yet, mostly because I haven''t had the time to get all of it set up.

lets wait for what M$ are gonna do with the romour of longhorn that the GUI will be in 3d. Hope they redefine the word GUI )

It''s quite usable. (However, I''m a unix developer, so YMMV )
From a skinning standpoint, all of the graphical elements can be themed (probably not quite as much as WB, but not too bad). I think the biggest downside to the themes I''ve seen is that there don''t seem to be any themers with the talent of treetog or Alexandrie (just to name two favorites
