Double posts = lost skin comments
Tuesday, December 8, 2009 by 2of3 | Discussion: WinCustomize Site Issues
This a bug that I have noticed recently. Certain people always leave a double post when they comment. It's just one of those weird things. I have a suspicion that it's a browser issue.
But here is the strange result of the double posting:
Each page of comments is 25 posts long. After that, a new page gets created. Now, if one of those 25 comments are doubled, you loose a comment. You can see this by going to the next page. You'll see that the comment number is off by the same amount of double comments that you have on the previous page.
You may say that WC is just counting the posts as separate even though they have the same comment #, but I know that this isn't the case. Take for example this skin: https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=6986&libid=1&p=2 On page 2, you will see that there are 3 instances of double comments. The last comment on the page is #47. Go to page 4 and you'll see that the first comment is #51.
Comment#49 is one that I wrote myself as a test when I saw that #48 was missing. Comment #50 was written by a friend. Page 4 did not get generated until comment #51 was written.
So it looks like WC counts how many actual posts there are per page and when the number is greater than 25, the last ones get omitted.
I'm not sure I've explained my theory so that it's understandable or not ![]()

Well it can and has happen for me using IE 8 when making comments, mine usually happen when there is something going on with the server like very slow or long response times.

I always end up having a doiuble post (bloody annoying, too), but I never ever use Google Chrome, only Firefox.
BTW: I've been getting double posts for something like 2 years... maybe more. Think I was the first to be parroted. ![]()

The doubles are different to those of the past.... back when it was a simple process of deleting the double.....these days if you delete one...both go....so both need to remain...![]()
With WC2K9 [10] on the horizon I expect this issue will be resolved...![]()

One mechanism of double posting seems (to me) to be when there is an extraordinarily long 'wait' for the post to appear in the thread.
Another mechanism appears to be tied into the "egads!" notification (although that occurs in the former as well). When that appears, I can be almost sure that my response is in the thread. I just have to renavigate to WC to see it.
I think the lost number phenomenon is tied into the buffer somehow. I remember how if one posted #25 or #26, the response would 'disappear' only to reappear when the comment following it posted. Bara fixed that one, though.

Thanks for the responds folks.
The main point of the post was however not the fact that there are double posts. That doesn't bug me so much. The issue was that the double posting results in lost comments.

I've noticed that all of pinchecl's post have been doubled for a few years now. I think he uses Firefox.

I have tried twice to post a comment on the Vintage Tiffany WB skin, and even though I am properly logged in on WinCustomize Browser, it does not accept my comment. No explanation, just nothing happens. If It had accepted my post, it would have been #24. Maybe it will eventually appear as a duplicate post. I don't understand why after a half hour it still does not appear.

There are 2 duplicate posts before your comment, so your comment will never show up. In fact I can guarantee you that the next post that will actually show up on that skin will be comment #26

As I predicted, the next comment that just showed up on the skin in question was #26: https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=7025&libid=1&p=2
I think that this proves my theory.

I wonder if there is a common thread between users that constantly double post. Do they all use the same web browser.....maybe Google Chrome?
