Updated to WindowBlinds 7 and have many problems
Sunday, November 29, 2009 by Ralph598 | Discussion: WindowBlinds
I updated WindowBlinds to 7 today and been having many problems with it since. Since updating, I’ve had most of the apps installed on this machine crashing either when opening them or when trying to use them. Also any screensaver that was not default with Visa (ones I have downloaded from Wincustomize) would also give an error when trying to run. This machine is Vista 64 SP2 with all the current patches from Microsoft. I uninstalled WindowBlinds and that seems to have corrected the problem.

Sounds as thought the update files got messed up.
Did you use Impulse to uninstall WB and run a clean up program?
If you did then reinstalling Win 7 as a fresh install should work then. I would also suggest turning off your A/V and security programs before doing a reinstall. At times it has caused some problems for folks.

The only error that came up was when starting up I got ODZip.dll could not be found; so, I reinstalled ObjectDesktop.
Actually, I suspect that there is something going on with the OS. Sometime in a few days, I am going to reinstall Vista and that will probably solve the problem.

WB doesn't use ODZip.dll, but I believe DesktopX does. Do you have DesktopX installed?

Yes I did and I reinstalled DexktopX and that error went away. I reinstalled Vista (64 Bit Vista Home Preimum) and WindowBlinds, the problem that was happening is gone, however I have a new issue!
I am unable to open WindowBlinds; double clicking on the icon in the systray or the start menu does nothing. I do not know if anyone else has seen this, I might try uninstalling and reinstalling to see if that fixes it.

ust before your trouble started did you updated Desktop X?
Reply #7 Monday, December 7, 2009 10:27 PM
I believe I had updated Desktop X before the original problem started.
The new issue (unable to open WindowBlinds) started after I reinsrtalled the OS on this machine. I am going to try uninstalling and reinstalling WB to see if that fixes.
I will do that in a day or two and will update everyone with what happens next.

sorry to hijack the tread but i also have a slight prob since I've format and installed WB7 again.
In a previous update I've seen a few old blinds got updated with a W7 version,I've installed those blinds b4 the last update and they where not updated.
is there a way to get the W7 version of those blinds back.....thanks in advance.

You need to delete the previous version of the Windowblind before installing the new version. The Windowblinds themselves do not update.....only the Windowblinds program updates.

I uninstalled and reinstalled WB7 and am still unable to open it up, The strange thing is, if I doubleclick on a *.wba file, it will install it and I will get a tooltip in the systray saying that a skin has been installed, do I want to apply it. That seems to be the only way to get it to work.
I did have Impule check to see that it was installed correctly, is there anyway to get back to the previous version of WindowBlinds? The was a fresh install after I reinstalled Vista on this machine.

What you need to do is.....
open the folder C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock\Windowblinds and delete each folder with the name of the Windowblind that is supposed to have a Windows 7 version but doesn't......
then....go to the Windowblind gallery here at www.wincustomize.com and download the windowblind file again.
windowblinds (the program) will not "update" individual windowblinds (the skins)...you have to delete the old version of the skin and install the new version after

#1 Did you reinstall Vista or did you repair Vista? If Vista was having issues like you alluded to you may have been better off to reformat and do a 100% clean install.
#2 did you install Mycolors and if so did you install it after Windowblinds?

# 1 I reinstalled Vista (formatted the disk, etc.)
# 2 I am not sure which I installed first, does that matter? Mycolors is working, I am able to use it to apply themes with out any problems.
I have tried everyting I can think to get it to open the WindowBlinds GUI; including typing in the path and the exe in the run command.
Could it possibly be that my video card's driver is not current? I don't like messing with video drivers if not necessary, but I will if I have to.

It matters, Ralph. MyColors has to be installed before Windowblinds, and when verifying Installation, etc///it needs to go before Windowblinds.
So, if you didn't do it that way, uninstall (save Aero first) both, reboot and then install both in the order I mentioned rebooting after each install.
Also, if you verify installation, verify MyColors, close Impulse then verify Windowblinds. It's a quirk in Impulse....

Thanks or the suggestion, I will try uninstalling both and reinstalling with Mycolors going first when I get some time. I will update everyone with what happens...

I uninstalled Mycolors and WindowBlinds, reinstalling Mycolors first. Windowblinds is still refusing to open, I think something went wrong on the inital install. When I have the time over the holiday, I am going to reinstall the OS again and then Mycolors & Windowblinds and make sure I install Mycolors first.

I just wanted to post an update for anyone who might still be following this thread.
I just updated WindowBlinds with the new version that became available today and that seems to have solved the problem, I am now able to open the GUI and the icon for WB is showing in the systray.
Don't know what was wrong to begin with, or why the update corrected it, but everything seems to be good now.

Are you able to provide any more information on the errors?
