Permissions_problem_Windows 7
Saturday, November 21, 2009 by Richard Mohler | Discussion: Personal Computing
Every now and then when I go to save a file or download a file a message comes up saying you need permission from administrator to do this.. I'm listed as administrator under all files & have full control, so I don't get it...When I try to save file again in same place it says replace file & this time it works.. Any suggestions?

When I read the title I wondered, why would Richard have a permission problem with his uploads. ![]()
Goes to show, you can't judge a book by it's cover, or in this case, a thread by it's title.

I figured this one out yesterday. You have to right click on the folder that you're trying to save that file to, select properties-->administrators(or users if you're the only one on your computer)-->edit tab-->and then check the radio boxes for the properties you want to allocate to yourself.
I was having a frustrating time creating my own .png for objectdock icons (I recolor a lot of ones that come with the free program). I would open the png icon file in Photoshop, recolor it, and then I didn't have permission to save the image. After I assigned myself permission to alter the Objectdock file on my harddrive under programs, I was able to save again.
I hope this fixes your issue, Richard.

Thanks all. I already checked all boxes the only other thing I did was to make me the owner/administrator under advanced, we'll see what happens now.. You'd think it would automatically make me owner/administrator, wonder why it didn't.?

I have the same problem and my UAC is OFF! (or at least on the bottom setting)
Not only that, but I can save a few files to the same folder BEFORE I get the message!
Thanks for the info Karen, I'll try that!

Looks like I forgot one part of it -- its:
Properties--->Security--->>administrators(or users if you're the only one on your computer)-->edit tab-->and then check the radio boxes for the properties you want to allocate to yourself.

k10w3,
Just to add.......
If under "folder view" properties people have selected to use "use sharing wizard" (in XP its "use simple file-sharing") then the "security" tab will not be there when they right-click into "properties". You must UN-CHECK "use sharing wizard" in order for the "security" tab to show up.

Windows 7 has implemented addition security mechanism to prevent accidental or intentional file or folder modification by not allowing users other then owner of file or folder to access it. Hence incase if you need to access, modify or delete such files or folder you need to take ownership first
here is a link for the manual way to take ownership
or
Here is the easy Link that will add a right click opption to your context menu

Mac OS.
Sorry, Richard...couldn't resist the bad urge. You probably have to dial down the security level on the UAC. Short of that? No real solution I've ever found.
