Download bigger than expected??

Sunday, November 15, 2009 by Smcnerney | Discussion: DeskScapes

I have tried to download the beta for 3.0 through 3 different systems (all windowd 7 64 bit) now.  Each time I run the download through impulse and each time I get the message "the file downloaded is larger than expected".  Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

This can happen when there are security programs that interfere with the download. If you have any such programs, try adding Impulse.exe as an exclusion in them. If this does not help, try temporarily disabling them and then try again.

Thanks for the advice, no luck though.  It get's to 7.8% of the download and then tells me the file size is smaller than expected.  I will open a support ticket with Stardock and see what they tell me.

To help speed things along with your ticket, please include the Impulse error log and your startup/dxdiag info.  You can find out how to do this here: https://forums.stardock.com/341573

I am getting the same error here. "File download is smaller than expected."

Ditto on same error.  I was getting "File Download is smaller" when trying to patch to the latest version..

I uninstalled and rebooted.. now trying to re-install it's saying "File Download is Larger than expected".

I've disabled my AVG antivirus and added an exception to no avail.

I downloaded and installed myColors and it went fine.  It's only the Deskscapes install that's failing.

Those of you who are getting the error . .

You should see DS3 if you

  1. Bought it
  2. Bought the upgrade
  3. Bought DS2 in the last three months
  4. Subscribe to ODNT

Otherwise, you shouldn't see it at all and that might be the issue.

Can you confirm any of that?

OK I have the last beta installed and the option to 'Upgrade' has appeared for me and gives me the 'smaller than expected' error when I try to do so.  I do not fit into any of the categories above, so I assume I should not be seeing the upgrade option.

I assumed I would have to update and then during/after installation it would prompt me to purchase it.  I assumed this because I can't find the option to purchase the upgrade at a discount anywhere, only the full price (or what looked to be a weekend discount or something which was different to the price Neil said an upgrade from DS2 goes for).  Navigation design seems to have failed me here.

I have two updates in Impulse. The one for DS is showing this error.( file is larger than expected) This update just showed up this morning and is for 3.00.026. I have 3.00.022 installed.

The one for WB's will first give an Error: Non-negative number required. Parameter name: value and if I try again,I get the same error as DS. The version updating from is 7.00.008 and to is 7.00.009.

I have already tried resetting data multiple times and tried w/o AV or defender running. Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

Edit: I should add that I'm on 32bit Vista at the moment.

Ah, I disabled 'show pre-release' versions button and I can reinstall (v2) of it finally..

It'd be great if Impulse actually showed you little things like, paid upgrades, version numbers etc.

So now when I install the next Elemental beta, is it going to prompt me to install the non functioning deskscapes beta again?

Maybe if V3 had been released as a seperate product or if Impulse prompted you to buy the upgrade before downloading an unlicensed version all this mess would have been avoided.

[edit] Oh I just noticed that the version is listed at the bottom of the screen... V2.5 (v2.95 beta available)  which..er.. i guess for me is incorrect.

Wizard1956: What if you uninstalled DeskScapes and then reinstalled from scratch? This would have a different approach because in incremental versions of a given app/game, only the files that changed are downloaded. It's more likely for a full redownload to go successfully.

Wizard1956, try uninstalling what you have installed for WindowBlinds and DeskScapes and then reboot your PC. Install fresh from within Impulse. If you are not seeing the most current version numbers, try resetting the Impulse data again.

You are absolutely correct, that did the trick.

The uninstall/reinstall worked to get me the updates although in a round about way. Both current versions seem to be working fine.

Thank you both for your replies. Good job, Team Stardock.
