DesktopX 4.0 Pro Beta 1 bug reports

Questions, Complaints, issues

Saturday, November 7, 2009 by Littleboy | Discussion: DesktopX

Update: A new build has been released with some fixes (along with availability of the standard version). Bug reports should now be made in this thread.

DestkopX 4.0 Pro Beta 1 has been released on Impulse.

Zubaz is relaxing on his private island today (he will tell you he's sick, don't believe him!), so here is a thread to post issues.

There is no official changelog yet, but here are a few changes:

  • Plugins and data can now be found in "%ProgramData%\Stardock\DesktopX\SDPlugins". If you have custom plugins installed, you will have to manually copy them from the DesktopX folder in Program Files for your objects to work.
  • Themes, objects & gadgets are now in Public Documents\Stardock\DesktopX
  • DesktopX right-click menu to create new objects

Post anything that looks odd.  Make sure to give your system information including your OS (including 32 or 64 bit), Service Pack version and if it's hard to explain (or even if it isn't) a screenshot.

As before, choosing Toggle Object Palette when right clicking the DX icon in the systray does nada.

Works for me. Are you on Win 7?

Vista Home Premium.

DX still don't run at startup.

Well, it's only the first beta so there is plenty of time to fix broken things before the final version.

I understand that but...If you remember - our friend Zubaz has asked us a question: What would you like to see in DesktopX 4.x? We've answered on a 8 pages. Where the results? Did you see at least one in a new version? I didn't!

So I've not told about broken things. I've tried to say that nothing from the list of known DX 3.5 issues has not corrected. As well as nothing of our desires has not added into DX 4.0...

I don't know how Stardock's developers works on their software. However I'm sure that all of useful functions which has already worked in the previous version should be transferred to a new version without any changes. Instead some of them has been lost or stopped working correctly.

Besides I'm sure that within 1,5 years they had a great possibility to make not only cosmetic changes in the DesktopX but a fundamental too. I don't need the DX item in the right click context menu and one more DX folder in the Program Data (which is not necessary in Win-7 because DX 3.5 is working on this system without any problems!).

I'm playing with WMI a lot of time because this area is very interesting for me. And I must say that the access to system folders and data in Windows-7 is nearly the same like in WIndows XP. You only need switch UAC to the low security level or even turn it off.

Just let's say "Vista Goodbye" and we will be happy.

No widgets in the import dialog. Only objects. We used to have a widget section there......

As far as I can tell, they're all listed together now, objects, widgets, and gadgets. I kinda like that--not having to switch between two lists--but there should be something to denote which is which.

wrigleys: apparently it's only the Pro version at this time. The standard version beta will probably be released early next week (hopefully along with a changelog  ) .

Well, mine seems to be selective. For example, I have not moved my objects, widgets, and themes to the new directory, yet Tinted DX is in the DX directory, and the objects directory.

Has Stardock included these in the program? I think not. Would be cool, tho.

I believe once you run a widget/etc. it will then show up in the list. So that's probably how they got there.

If I'm not mistaken, it looks like Infinity and Steampunk are included, though!

(hopefully along with a changelog ) .

That would be helpful.

Have not had time to even look at this..

Don't worry.

This BETA is unworthy for your attention! I've already uninstalled it...

Let's wait for the next update which will work more correctly (I hope).

Bump.

Was this beta release official or an accident? We haven't heard any new information about since.

The one released was only for DX Pro, it seems.

I hope it was only an accident. Otherwise I'll use the previous version as long as it will be possible...

Sorry about not being around and responding.

Yes, this is an official release.

Yes, DX4 is going to be stripped down to bare bones and then rebuilt better than ever.

Yes, this is the Pro version and the standard version is coming.

No, we are not going to be able to hit everything on the wish-list thread and not everything right away.

Plugins have been moved so that there are not security issues with them

Widgets and objects and gadgets and graphics have been moved to the standard locaation for Stardock apps.

Right-click options have been added to make creating new things easier.

Sidebar gadget export have been removed (since MS has dropped the sidebar in Windows 7 as a failure in Vista and what were sidebar gadgets can now be anywhere  . . like objects/widgets/gadgets).  One less thing to support so better features can be added.

Expect more builds in the near future and know that we are listening.

And 2 of RedneckDudes desktops were added as a special bonus to be included with DesktopX!

Couldn't help myself.......

i have not had much time to devote to anything other than the slave-drivers i work for (112+ hrs of OT in Oct, 3 days at home in the whole month).  So i have not had time to watch every thread etc.  So..  a few simple q's

 1. can i install the 4 beta and KEEP the 3.x pro currently running somewhere?  Or is there a simple ay to go back and forth between them somehow?  Im not working on anything right now so i guess i could use the beta for now, nothing pressing is stoping me.

 2. is there a list somewhere of what is being done first, etc?  So we can test the things you want us to so we know if they work or not on multiple systems?

Zu/Etc  I know people like to complaine but i want you to know personally how much i appriciate you and the team there at stardock.  SD could easily have killed DX and just use it in-house for your own things, and i want you to know that i personally appriciate your pushing the update, and keeping it out there for all of us.

I have dozens of apps i can load and test or if anyone at SD wants to test something i have as a gadget just let me know and ill send you the code.
