destructive comments
Thursday, November 5, 2009 by Vampothika | Discussion: Community
I would like to post my distaste to recent comments on my master skin Saboteur. Calling my work "not master skin quality" is below the belt. Especially when it is a drive by comment and the skin has not even been downloaded.
I think if you are going to comment on any skin, it should be at least downloaded and tested before inacurate comments and assumptions are made.
I personally believe that if you have nothing constructive to say about a skin, then please say nothing at all.
I spend many weeks and hours on every skin I do. I pour passion, talent, and knowledge into them. They are tested in every possible way that a skin can be tested, and only then is it submitted. The same goes for cursors, icons, and any matching accessory I make.
I can handle criticism, but only if it is constructive, and accurate based on the downloading of the skin itself.

It's not actually a limitation/condition imposed by Wincustomize.com...but by the author of the product which is used.
If the originator of a 'brush' requests credit...money...Kudos...name in neon lights...then the user is obliged to comply.
Often this can go unnoticed/forgotten/overlooked, but as long as it is rectified when notice is drawn to the situation then all is good.
If needs must that the reading of credits sounds like an Oscar acceptance speech "I'd like to thank my kindergarten teacher for changing my nappies..." then so be it.
A lot of 'stuff' out there is "public domain" and equally much of that may even be public domain unlawfully....namely said to be free to use...by someone who is not the REAL author.
It is situations such as those that can make even the most astute and careful-to-credit person look silly. It happens.
Hopefully common sense ultimately prevails...![]()

Almost all of the artists who submit work to the Stock and Resource Gallery on DA have rules posted.
o Resources & Stock Images o Fractal Resources o Textures o Application Resources o Tutorials o Fonts o Stock Images o Video Resources & Tutorials o Literature Templates o Clipart o 3D Models o Miscellaneous o Vector Resources
Most of them ask for credit and a link back to their site in your description. Most want you to note them and let them know you are using their work with a link to it. Everyone I have ever dealt with has responded to my notes, requests, etc. That particular part of the DA community is made up of some very talented and supportive folks. I think what they do is pretty awesome.

Thanks, Po. I did that with my Haunted Victorian wallpaper, but I was just curious because most of my application resources don't come from DeviantArt -- I get them from Adobe/Cfusion, Obsidian Dawn, and 123Freebrushes -- but I got to thinking, just because some of those places don't have specifically written out EUA, after the thread RedneckDude posted about Softpedia, I realized some of the places I'm getting my resources from might not have them legally. I guess I'll just do my best to give credit where due and be really content with my Master Apprentice status, since it looks like the BIG hassle comes when there is financial gain from a creation.

Blame skinhit. I always do. Then I have a cigarette and all is right with the world. If we could all just take a moment and blame skinhit we would feel so much better. Life is too short. We need to be free of the stress and frustration..of the anger and resentment. To blame skinhit is the goodly thing to do. You will feel the weight of all that negativity lifted from your shoulders and your heart. Do it. Do it now. Everyone, close your eyes and take a deep breath and as you slowly release it say 'It's all skinhits fault." Now, doesn't that feel better? You should do this at least three times a day and four on Mondays. Trust me. Trust the Po'.

So I came online today to see if a comment had been said and I found the Master Skin deleted....Interesting I thought.
Then I came on here and saw this thread and honestly, proceeded to laugh for the past 10 minutes it took for me to sift through this thread. So let me see the general consensus.
1. People who don't buy 4.99 themes that they can't get a refund for are no longer allowed to post "negative" feedback because they can't legitamitely use the theme.
2. People with a low post count/lurkers clearly do not know what they are talking about, because they are merely individuals and not skinners.
3. There is a conspiracy to antagonize Master Skinners and coerce them into possibly leaving.
Let me start off by saying this is some of the most moronic bits of information I have ever read. I have been using Windowblinds for over 6 years now and have used countless skins. I have helped test themes from multiple skinners around the world and have given them constructive feedback to create the skins they create for this website and this community. I no longer have time to sit here and comment every single time, but when I feel that a skin is NOT worth the pixels, I am damn well going to say it.
I wish I had my post still, because it was constructive.
Let me try to recollect my thoughts as I can't even see the screenshot anymore.
Overview: Minimal theme, with no gradients, dark lines on top of even darker backgrounds. Min/Max/Close buttons too small to be "usable" in a day to day environment. Start Menu shutdown/restart dialogue buttons were too generic to discern WHAT they did. The skin was only designed for Vista, when I use Windows 7.
Now tell me this, are these things suddenly going to change when I buy the theme? Are the gradients going to magically appear? Are the buttons going to instantly grow, as if they had injested Mario magic mushrooms? Are the dialogue buttons suddenly going to spring to live and say "I AM RESTART! CLICK ME!"? Is this theme suddenly going to work perfectly on Windows 7?
The answer to this is an absolute, 100% no. Perhaps my approach was negative too quickly and she decided to go to the forum midway in my post. I told her I really liked her Start Button. My main concern was the fact that it wasn't up to the caliber of other Master Skins. I pointed out that for a minimalistic skin, you have to play a huge balancing act. If you sway one way in minimalism it can bite you, and I felt she had unfortunately fallen to these problems.
I understand Stardock is a company and they rationale is somewhat to the tune of...
"This theme is good enough, and she wants to charge for it. Okay cool, I'm done, let's make some money."
Not to bring up the economy, but right now I'm not going to just blindly shell out money for a theme that I am 90% sure will not be up to the standards I want. I gave feedback in hopes that she would understand where SOME users are coming from and try and bring up her caliber in work. I like some of her themes, I just don't have time to pat everyone on the back every single second of every single day.

After reading all of the 85 posts above, all I can say is that it's quite sad reading, considering the posts that stand out as rubbish, come from long time members of this community. Those of you who really thought you had a lot to say, try to read through this thread again without leaving a comment afterwards. You might learn something!...

I haven't much to say about this thread, but the above statement bothers me....
Am I naive, or does this mean that "private messages" aren't private?
If one or other or both of the respondents to a [series of] PMs has sufficient issue with its/their content that they feel they must forward it/them to a site admin then that is their prerogative.
They [PMs] are certainly NOT observed by a third party....
Good to know, Jafo! But just in case.....I take back all the crap I said about you!

BTW, I find it ironic that all this goes on over a skin called Saboteur.

where did it seem that i was bitching?. This is what i mean about opinions. I wasn't bitching about anything i merely voiced my opinion about something but YOU took that as bitching. I know that vista/XP are totally different and now with 7 things are changed even more. But other masters manage to include substyles for other O/S's so i fail to see your point.
Reply #97 Friday, November 6, 2009 4:11 AM
I'm going to make a suggestion to you, Kitty.
Now...... You have done enough xp skins to know what images you have to draw and where to put them, right? It is in fact possible to skin an OS in the blind (no pun intended) if you have a fellow skinner that you trust.
I and another skinner do this every time she does her Win7 substyle. She doesn't have Win7 so she relies on me to test it. Here's what we do: She puts all the images in place and sends me the skin. We then do a live skype session where we go through the skin section by section and I tell her what needs to be adjusted. It really works, ya know.
Just an idea ![]()

Ok only one thing...i don't understand what the hell the point with the discussion of the substyles for xp and vista and the quality master skin...are two things completely separate
A skin with three substyles has more quality perhaps? no, it has more work and effort
Another thing...if the people has xp don't buy a skin for vista...simple no? What's the problem?
Reply #99 Friday, November 6, 2009 4:58 AM
No, it's not been deleted. It's being hold in the moderation queue pending Stardock moderation, due to an update. ![]()

Perhaps it is not that the skin isn't master quaility but the quality of what is a master skin these days is what changed.
The allmighty dollar wins again.......

It seems pretty straight forward to me...find out what the authors requires and abide by that.
