Vista is driving me round the bend...

Monday, October 26, 2009 by Fuzzy Logic | Discussion: Personal Computing

Here's hoping my Windows 7 disc arrives soon, because I've had enough of Vista.

Explorer window: Suddenly, for no reason, this will forget what size it was. It will open up about 640x480 and I will have to resize it.

Start Menu: I've all sorts of problems with this, mainly due to permissions. It wouldn't allow programs to create shortcuts on installation, I couldn't move items to where I wanted etc.

Worst, a few moments ago, the Games folder vanished. Poof! Just gone. After half an hour searching for it, I had to restore from yesterday's backup to get it back...

Windows only remembers so many window customizations, there are a few apps that will let you set the memory to a much higher number, Ive been using tweakUI in XP for years for that.

The strangest error I've had in Vista was that one day, out of the blue, a bunch of my shortcuts re-linked to themselves.

So, one day I tried to open up MS Word, only to find that it wouldn't open.  Why?  The shortcut had somehow changed to open, not MS Word, but the shortcut itself.  All of my Office programs had this happen.  Also, because the shortcuts weren't technically "broken," Vista didn't open the "searching for missing program" box to fix it for me.

I tried finding the *.exe files the shortcuts should have been linked to, but couldn't find a couple (Access I think was one of them), so I wasn't able to fix it that way.

So then I tried to reinstall Office to fix the problem.  I then found that Office cannot be reinstalled once it has been installed once.  I then tried to uninstall Office, which gave me an error.  I ended up having to manually uninstall Office using a guide on Microsoft's help page, just to reinstall it, just to fix the stupid shortcuts.

Other than that, Vista has worked tolerably well for me.

I have Windows 7 RC build 7100, it is working nicely for me.  Much quiker load times for GC as well

But yeah, Vista sucks bad...

My Vista(ke) stopped opening folders in the same window.  Now every time I double click on a folder, it opens in it's own window, even though to is set to use same window.  If I want to drill down several folders, I get a trail of open windows!

Hopefully my 7 discs will arrive tomorrow and I can move on to a good OS.

Bad install of sp2 is what that is!

There has been a lot of strange reports of SP2 problems after install. Evevn though it completes the install and looks good things begin to happen slowly.

Best to do a new install - if you do not get your win7 disc soon.

I remember the short time I used Vista. I also had to keep readjusting my windows, icons and preferences because they would constantly reset themselves to defalts. Ive been using the 7 betas for a while and all those problems are long gone. I just got the 7 DVD from Amazon today and I think I'll format and install this weekend after some target environment experimentation.

I must be one of the lucky ones, I have no more problems with Vista than I do XP, in fact I like Vista & only use XP for skinning.

Only problem with Vista i have is that it keeps changing Games folder from big icons to list, and it hasn't done even that in a while. It also takes quite a while to start responding normally after booting, propably because of all the junk it loads at startup, or the fact that this install is nearly two years old.

Otherwise, i  Vista better than XP, as my almost-never-booted XP install on my other hard drive can tell you, i use it only as compatibility mode for old games, though 98 would be better choice for that.

I almost forgot, mine randomly changes folders to photos instead of list.

I've been using Vista x64 since I got my new computer almost a year ago. The only issues I've had are with UAC.

I'm so glad I went from XP to Win 7 and skipped over Vista.
