Jafo Embarks On A Road Trip

And only 36 years since the last one.....

Wednesday, August 26, 2009 by Jafo | Discussion: Community

Tomorrow morning [Friday, Aus time] I'm on a plane to the US and Canada.   All things going well [the US doesn't chuck me out for being unintelligible] I'll be visiting all the great guys and gals at Stardock HQ.

Yay for me.....  It's been a loooong time coming.  I've known these guys for about a decade so it'll be a 'buzz' to finally catch up with them in 'Real Life' [tm].

In all of my history with skinners/skinning I've only met 3 skinners before, all of whom were from Oz, like me.....so this will likely be sensory overload [or something]...

I have a beat-up old laptop that'll hopefully keep me in contact here on my travels....and if I get a chance on the road I'll try to post the odd pic or two, but I'll likely not be on quite as frequently/long as is usual.

If you've the inclination to PM or otherwise contact me re issues with Wincustomize and/or its inhabitants it may be a better bet for the next few weeks to badger Island Dog in lieu.....[he yearns for your contact]....

Hopefully I can get one or two group mug-shots at Stardock on the 16th to show you what an ugly - er - wonderful bunch of people they all are....

Take care of each other...I'll be busy taking photos....

Cheers,

Paul.

Canada declares beer shortage crisis.  Thinking of deporting "The man who would be king" Jafo.  US warned to beef up border crossings.  Only so much beer left in Canada for Hanker.

Enjoyed your visit at Stardock, Jafo?

I've got the impression that your presence there was appreciated. Larry told me he was sorry that he didn't have enough beer for you, though.

Have fun.

Day 19 ...got to Detroit....

...got cleverly lost...[my fault - Terry was right [this time]] ...got to SD HQ just on 5 pm.

....I mean...everything was stacked against us....wanker in the care-hire before us with his blue 'Stang...just HAD to check every inch of the car for scrapes. etc...just so when he totalled it in a missed fly-over he wouldn't be stung for ALL the mess...

....got lost...ended up on some backroad...lo and behold...goods-train shunting....life ebbing away...

...finally at the SD turn-in...."It's a Macca's driveway", says Terry....."no it ain't...I know where I am....now....seen the Googlemap"....says I.

OK, so I was late....and it was a mongrel of a trip, one way or another....that AM we were in Niagara....driving to Toronto...to catch the flight....and that arvo we were finally THERE!!!!!

AND....[not to labour the point]....hadn't had a beer....

So far this trip [read backwards for the hilights]....the other 3 had been asking "what's your highlight so far?"....and always it was..."walking out on that glacier" [quite a humbling thing to be on an ice floe that is deeper than the Eiffel Tower is high....

....but now, I have to say....it's "making it to Stardock"....and meeting all [most] of the guys ['guys' being generic].

Saw ALL the important things....Frogboy's Porsche [nice]...Frogboy's bees [subdued]....Frogboy's frogs...[he even caught one [probably staged... ]]...Frogboy's Groundhog [cute]...Frogboy's tortoises...[surprised even him]....and even Frogboy's employees/staff....[geeky, computer nerds, one and all]...

I knew most of the SD crew...after around 10 years doing whatever it is that I do here....but at last!!!....there they were....

There's more to post yet....but did make it to beer 87 by day's end......shall post more shortly...

Washington?! OMG...you'll need 90 more veeery soon! No other way to stomach the place!

You will, however, absolutely love The Smithsonian.

We have a city in Oz like that... it's called Canberra.... full of kindy kids disguised as politicians.  Went there once... it's the porn capital of Oz... some of it out-lawed in other parts of the country, seems our pollies must like that sort of thing.

Still, didn't like the place... except for the (not as comprehensive as the Smisthsonian) National Museum.

It must have been great to finally meet the Stardock crowd after all these years.

Adding to day 19....

Went out to dinner with Brad and Kris [Frogboy and Nakor]....on the way dropped off to see Brad's new house-in-construction....lovely place it'll be...and is in a lovely setting....saw several deer [Brad said 7.... I counted 5].

At the Italian restaurant we discussed the rise and fall of various entities....SD paid for beers 85 and 86 [and dinner too, thankyou, Brad]...and Terry and I made it back to the Hotel without missing a beat....NO WRONG TURNS [it clearly pays to drink and drive]....

Seems people like to locate hotels under flightpaths....but it wasn't too noisy.

All in all it was an action-filled day....I survived 3 or 4 hours of driving on the wrong side of the road without hitting anything [substantial/that breathed/that could read my licence plate/hurt]...got from Niagara to Toronto to Detroit to Stardock to the Motel and to bed.

End of day 19....probably gonna be the best of the trip, really.

The SD crew are a great bunch of people [but I already knew that]....and they will have to 'endure' me yet again....'cos like Arnie...."I'll be baaark"....

Day 21....hop on and hop off tour....hopped off at the Lincoln Memorial....reading out the 'State of the Union' speech to Terry [she has poor eyesight] gave me a lump in the throat [and I'm not even American].....quite powerful words.

Washingon is an impressive place....and so far we made it through a few of the Smithsonian Museums...though the Aerospace one is tommorrow.

Beer 93 ....yep, not King....

You must be one of the first to make a pilgrimage to Stardock, at least from so far away. I bet it was exciting for them, too.

Day 22 ...still in Washington....beer 100 .....YAY!!!

Aerospace Museum......great....but the wrong place to see the 'real fun' planes....

...they are at Dulles Airport....darn and blast...and we're off to New York tomorrow....looks like I'll have to get back to DC again soon....

One of THE things I'd wanted to see was a Republic F105D Thunderchief .....and THAT was at Dulles.

Bugger!!!!!

I drew them eons ago...
