DeskScapes 3 Beta 1 Bug reports

Thursday, August 20, 2009 by ZubaZ | Discussion: DeskScapes

A DeskScapes beta has been released.  This build has a new user interface, effects that can be applied to dreams, and works on XP, Vista, and Windows 7.  Sadly, the effects are Windows Vista and Windows 7 only.

Double-clicking a dream no longer loads a dream.  You will need to use the "Apply changes" button.

Post anything that looks odd.  Make sure to give us your system information including your video card, your OS (including 32 or 64 bit), and if it's hard to explain (or even if it isn't) a screenshot.

You may want to ensure you have the latest DirectX9 runtimes (even on Win7) by installing the following : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

There is an issue on some machines with some dreams where the UI may crash out when it builds the dream list.  There will be an update on Friday morning to resolve this.

Try resetting your Impulse data. Orb in the upper left, preferences, Reset data.

I have tried this and the update to the beta1 version still does not show up. I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit and 4 Gig of Ram.

The Deskscapes beta is fine but as a dream maker I have some questions and problems-

Will we get back the option of applying dreams from within the explorer by double clicking a dream or by the integrated deskscapes switch or right click/ Set as desktop background in the final version of new Deskscapes ?

Any of these would be really helpful as I have to again and over go to Personalize/ Set as desktop background or open the Deskscapes to change the dream.

Also, I can no more apply even my mpeg's or wmv's as dreamscene on my desktop by right clicking/ Set as desktop..... which has bothered me a lot recently since as I create dreams, I test my renders before packing them up as .Dream

For applying WMV/MPG files, just point deskscapes to the folder and it will show them in the UI.  Or drag the video file into the UI and it will copy it to the dreams folder and show it in the UI.

You used to be able to do the same thing with wallpapers with the windowblinds UI. That no longer works with the beta.

Still the same trouble on XP SP3 with Deskcapes 2.91 beta 8/28/2009 ==> everything's on desktop  is feezing when rebooting or log off / log in (and essentialy the dream which was launched before ...)

Deskscapes appears to be activated on this PC
Deskscapes engine appears to be running
(NEC LCD175vxm+) 1 is attached to MSI NX7300GS (NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS)

Deskscape.dll               2009/08/25 13:53:28
Deskscapes.dll                2009/08/25 13:53:06
DreamControl32.dll              2009/08/20 20:28:24
DeskscapesConfig.exe               2009/08/27 13:19:49

UI\DeskscapesVideo.dll      2009/08/20 20:28:54
Activate.exe                  2009/08/20 20:28:32
DreamTasks.exe                2009/08/20 20:28:57
DeskscapesVideo.dll           2009/08/20 20:26:54

Seemed to be fixed by updating to the latest MSI (nvidia) graphic card drivers, but generates a Windows XP crash (probably when PC goes in hibernation with screensaver ??) and after Windows scanned disk errors before reboot, everything's was again freezing on startup

Confirmed: If DeskCapes and a dream is loaded, it crashes XP (blue screen error) as soon as a sreensaver is trying to load
If you go to the "My Software" tab and click on deskscape over on the right side what version does it list? Version 3 shows as beta 2.90
Yes. It is shown as beta 2.91b. (I should learn to look closer before posting stupid questions )

I am having a strange problem with Deskscapes and Screen Savers.  I am using Vista  64 bit SP1.  When the Screen Saver comes on and runs for about 1 hr, then, when bringing it out of screen saver mode, the Desktop is Black.  I have to go to the Dreams program and choose another dream to run and then put it back to my previous dream to get them working again.  Anyone else seeing this?

A BSOD would typically indicate the failing driver and I suspect it will point to your video drivers.

Neophil,do you have the 190.38 drivers installed? You may want to take yrags advice from this thread ,reply#10.LINK and install 186.18 instead. Some people have had problems with 190.38.

Where can I reload the previous version before this beta?It worked really well - the 2.90 version won't run my dreams. They just show up on the desktop like a regular wallpaper, but they aren't animated. I really want the other version back. Please?

Hi again. I downloaded the public version and now it wants me to pay for it before it will work. What do I do now, besides just have a good cry? Ever since I tried the beta, my computer has been acting like something gone crazy - nothing from Impulse will work right.

FINALLY! It's going now; after downloading the previous version, I upgraded to the beta again, and it's working like a champ. Thank you for being so patient with me.

You know... If you get that aggravated by stuff not working... Don't use beta software. And if the stable version doesn't work for you, don't use the software at all and wait 'til they release a stable version that works.

In the long run, it's better for your health.

thnx Neil, it works perfect but has the option of applying dreams by double clicking gone forever? OR it would be back in the final version of new Deskscapes?

... which are bringing as well an XP crash with blue screen error relative to graphic card

Though i went back to originals drivers of my MSI card and now i've tested that the trouble may come with which kind of screensaver is on ...

Example: with that Dream: https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=1092&libid=50 (Sunset Boat Ride) and that Screensaver: https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=366&libid=40 (Eye of the World) i get a crash when screensaver is loading and/or on reboot / log on, and with same Dream but that screensaver: https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=562&libid=40 (Oneida Lake Sunset) everything's goes fine (the whole with Gloss-Burgundy WB)

Where's the bug ?

Hi. Great! I finally can get Win7 Support for my Deskscapes! No problems yet on my win7 64bit. Now, one more BIG request...please, pretty please, add a changer to the program...so we don't have to manually change the dreams. That is the only reason I wouldn't have my dreams set. Win7 has a builtin changer for desktops now. Adding Dream changing to the mix would be perfect! Thanks!

My opinion is that no software should ever (except when there's very good reason, as in it never working anyway) drop functionality in upgrades.
