DeskScapes 3 Beta 1 Bug reports

Thursday, August 20, 2009 by ZubaZ | Discussion: DeskScapes

A DeskScapes beta has been released.  This build has a new user interface, effects that can be applied to dreams, and works on XP, Vista, and Windows 7.  Sadly, the effects are Windows Vista and Windows 7 only.

Double-clicking a dream no longer loads a dream.  You will need to use the "Apply changes" button.

Post anything that looks odd.  Make sure to give us your system information including your video card, your OS (including 32 or 64 bit), and if it's hard to explain (or even if it isn't) a screenshot.

You may want to ensure you have the latest DirectX9 runtimes (even on Win7) by installing the following : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

There is an issue on some machines with some dreams where the UI may crash out when it builds the dream list.  There will be an update on Friday morning to resolve this.

My opinion is that no software should ever (except when there's very good reason, as in it never working anyway) drop functionality in upgrades.

So what's your opinion Redneck ? Should those options be back in final versions of both the programs?

My opinion is that I would like to see the drag and drop function returned to the final version of WB Config.  As for the dreams, I don't mind clicking apply, rather than double clicking. Just a redneck opinion.

So,in order to have a new pretty face on WindowBlinds Configuration , we lost  the explorer backgrounds section and drag and drop wallpaper?  This is called progress and an "upgrade"? I would appreciate some  word back on if or when they will be available again.

I realize it's a beta but I and RND have asked questions that no-one seems to want to answer. "What drag and drop ability" is not an answer.

Edit: Sorry this is in the wrong forum.   It should be in WindowBlinds. Could a Mod move it please?

Yes. It is shown as beta 2.91b. (I should learn to look closer before posting stupid questions )

Rasmus Bertelsen

The only "stupid" questions are the one's we don't ask. Glad was able to help

I'm using windows 7 and deskscapes 2.91b with desktop collage. There are times after exiting a game, the desktop will turn black, and I have to reapply the desktop collage dreamscene. This happens with or without third-party codecs installed.

Desktop Collage is a dynamic dream, and is unlikely to rely on any third party codec. This is a problem that has always been around though. Some games/software doesn't do a clean exit, so deskscapes doesn't detect the shift from fullscreen.

How do I get the 2.91 beta? Impulse says it need to run as administrator. The only user account I use is admin. I also tried setting the compatibility to run as admin, same error. Is it possible to just download updates and beta without Impulse? I really hate this program. It is always something.

Once in a while the dream turns black, well the screen turns black but the Fences work. Then I try to use

the program to apply it again or a different dream but doesn't come back..BTW my DXDIAG program detects the Directx Version as 10

Otherwise it works fine most of the time.

I'm getting some really choppy playback on some of the "Video Dreams" (not all of them). The ones that are running choppy are causing Explorer to use 100% of one of the CPU cores.

I disabled all non Microsoft video codecs with the utility "InstalledCodec" but it made no difference.

Video drivers (Legacy Cat 9.8) and DirectX (updated today) are current and up-to-date.

Not sure what else to try, any ideas ?

..........BTW, the Dymanic Dreams seem to be running fine

Could be the bit rate or the format of the dream. Mine are fairly low bit rate and are mpeg2, which should not run choppy.

Are you having issues with any of mine?

Only one of yours, Spectral, the others seem fine.

Some of the ones that are using 100% of one of the cores are:

Patrick Mathews - Clear Blue, Embers, Hyphae, NegativeGravitySnow and RainbowStrings.

muckyman - venus

and a couple of Master Baron's.

Also, while typing this earlier, I was playing around with Deskscapes 3 Configuration to figure out the choppy ones and got a Bluescreen restart from Windows, Ouch!!!! THAT has never happend before

---Edit---

I can paste the minidump text of the crash report if anyone wants to see it...

Neil,

I get the following error from DreamMaker 3 when trying to add additional content files on Hybrid Dreams.

I found a way around it by doing the following...

1) Click on the Hybrid Content button and choose the .hybrid file
2) Click on the Dynamic Content button and choose the .hybrid file
3) Click on the Hybrid Content button
4) At this point Dream Maker will allow you to add files in the Additional files box without the error

I think I have found a bug or shall we say more of a conflict with another popular program - Yahoo Widgets running under Windows XP.

I am using the latest deskscapes 3 beta, latest yahoo widgets engine (4.5.2) and running Windows XP Professional SP3 (fully updated).

The conflict is that to start the first dream after reboot, or with each change of dream file - if yahoo widgets is already running you have to close down YW, change and apply the dream file - then restart yahoo widgets. Abit annoying as you have to do it every time

Other than that Deskscapes 3 beta runs fine. I also dual boot onto Win 7 RTM and deskcapes runs like a dream on there too (see what I did there? runs like a... oh nevermind )

What happens if you do not restart yahoo widgets after a dream change?

Then deskscapes seems to work just fine, I can switch between dreams quite easily.

On an unrelated note - the cpu usage for every dream in XP is much less than Windows 7 - why is that?

ps. Deskscapes 3 is a great product guys, if I could have one wish for a feature in v3 it would be a random dream changer - either every hour, two hours, six hours, once per day etc etc.
