Master Sniper
Friday, August 14, 2009 by Thuglifejunior | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
Hiya all you folk in WC Land and beyond ....a bit of Buzz Lightyear coming out in me there........just a quick question.......somebody on one of my screenshots brought up a thought, a Master Sniper.....now I know some of you think that we are not really useful, I disagree but then that is a different matter althogether...the question is, if someone as passionate as i am, and I know of a few others like me, quite a few, there is really no further rank than apprentice that we can go to, maybe after 10 years, we hit a lucky break and hit Master Apprentice....I don't know, I haven't been here long enough, but what is the furthest a sniper has gone.....I put a lot into my work, I'm just as passionate as the next bloke about this place, maybe even more so, cos it kinda saved my life in a way, but I would love the Honor of achieving Master Sniper in my lifetime, and yes all the bragging rights and prestige that goes with it......no I don't skin, but I have one in the works, but I would love to make it as a valuable, contributing member of the community as a Sniper......all I am asking, straight out, is this ever going to be attainable, if not it is not going to be earth shattering news, well a bit , but all I would like is a straight answer...is is possible...yes or No......thanks everyone, much love and much respect....the Thug

Hey count me in! If this is ever allowed to get off the ground, I'd like to be a part of it. I'm around all the time, might as well do something constructive!

Can't answer that one for you bud. I'm still a learner.
But I can say, just because you can box, doesn't mean you can climb in the ring with Tyson.
What makes a Skinner a Master? The most skins, or the best of quality skins?
Who would you prefer? Someone cranking out a bunch of screenshots faster than anyone else by merely changing their blind and wall, as opposed to someone who takes their time and put lots of thought into their concept, shoots fewer but World Class quality shots?
I feel in both cases that quality should win over quantity.
Like I said, I'm still learning.

Cp...if there's "policing" to do, then a Mod (or a few) are needed. None of us is one nor likely to become one (speaking for myself only).
If you wish to write a tutorial for the Wiki, that's not a hard thing to do. There's a model you can "dry try", and a tutorial on how to do it. You don't need WC/SD staff to do anything more than they'd do for any other tutorial.
Asking the shooter by pm or email can already be done...so unless I'm missing something, there's no problem here.
As for the Master Sniper stuff, it (in reality) has an internal logic problem: Namely one is using the skins/OD's etc. made by others to create the screen shot. Therefore, it isn't original work, so how can one be a Master of it? If one is talking composition, color, use of software to modify the desktop, then one can 'master' a technique.....but the artwork belongs to others. I think WC would have to redefine "Master". Unlikely, at best.
I think you should be happy that everyone loves you and thinks you do great screenies...and leave it at that, because one thing I have seen, the folks who agitate for promotion don't get promoted. Some have been promoted clean outta here.

Good point here Doc and I thought about it.
There could be others who would like the same answer as well, is why a dedicated forum could serve a little bit better.
Other wise, it's just another secret.
Case in point, I've had dozens of people ask me how do I open my docks on a shot without showing my cursor, but my cursor is in the shot by itself doing nothing.
I don't mind helping out at all, but it would have been nice to be able to link these people to one spot that has the common answer to the same question.

Is it possible.....yes. Anybody in the community is eligible for promotion, but in all reality, Master Skinners are just that, people who are creating skins.
I'm toying with the notion of adding a new class, something that signifies a very special person in the community, but not necessary a "Master". Hope that wasn't too confusing. ![]()

Not confusing at all, and rather nice and friendly. ![]()
I agree with you...Master Skinner is exactly that. A non skinner shouldn't receive that title.
Maybe we ought to let I.D. be the Chef. Remember, too many chefs spoil the soup. ![]()

Once I saw that, I got the idea of creating a broad tutorial called Screenshot 101 that would sit with the rest of the community tutorials.
make sure you explain very clearly what a screenshot is (and isn't)
we still get some (not as many as used to) that download a screenshot, apparently set it as a wall, and can't figure out why the apps shown in the shot don't work when they click on them
no, I'm not kidding....

Oh hell no Bichur, I know for a fact you're not kidding!![]()
This is a damn perfect text book example of why Screenshot 101 may be needed.
The very first step in the tutorial to be addressed before it's even asked is, "what exactly is a screenshot?"

Bichur...thanks for the explanation. Now I understand why my desktop doesn't do anything! ![]()
Can you help me with why all that white stuff stays on the screen after I close MS Word, and why what I erased still prints out?
Thanks in advance. ![]()

for those who aren't familiar with the graphics programs they may have, you might also mention the Capture Docklet (if they have od free/pluss which will take the shot and drop it in a folder for them to upload when ready

sounds like your monitor is set to 'tan'
and why what I erased still prints out?
because making the text color match the background doesn't really make it erase and that's not a square trashcan/paper shredder on the toolbar, it's a printer

This is the right stuff needed for a beginner!

Good post Dale, and I'm satisfied with ID's response as well.
would be cool if it was a multi level system though......Rifleman, Marksman, Sniper, Master Sniper.
