Severe XP system problem

I had been having a couple of BSOD's about hardware problems and thought it might be my HDD ( kept restarting).. I installed a new one yet that was not the problem. Xp would not install, so I installed a new 400 watt PSU. Finally XP SP2 installed without a hitch, however the SM Bus Controller did not install. I am still having problems with the system constantly restarting randomly when I click on random install buttons or right click various random functions. There doesn't seem to be any sense to the shut downs. I have no ideas on how to get the controller drivers or which ones they are.
I thought it might be my video card so I updated to the newest drivers. but no help. Now I don't know if the video card could be going bad.
AMD 3200 Athlon Barton core, nVidia GeForce 7600GT, 2Gb ram, XP SP3 fully updated. I know it's an old system, but it's this or nothing for a long time.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I had the same thing happening on an old eMachine T2245 I put together for my wife.(I know it's old and slow,but so are we)
Getting the original drivers from their website fixed it right up.

Well I installed the SM Bus Controller. Device manager shows everything is OK yet I'm still having the restart problems. Each time it restarts I hear a single click or snap sound. Could this be a video card problem?

When you get fixated, you really get fixated....
The SM bus takes your temp....get past it.
Did you install full Mobo system drivers?
Hardware-wise... no. If you installed the newest Nvidia drivers, uninstall them and install an older version you've used before and know works.
The only thing that would make a 'click' on a re-boot is a PSU....
What is it?
What USB devices are hooked up? You did this XP/drivers install backwards.

I've always used the OS default SM Bus Controller under Intel and never have a prob with it Angus.

Sorry for the OCD Yrag. I did install the full mobo drivers. I have a usb external HDD, a scanner, a web cam, and a wireless mouse, all with the newest drivers available, which are not too new on a couple of items. I'll try rolling back the vieo drivers and see how it goes.

Look at the ext. HDD for the click.
The correct sequence of install would be XPSP2/Drivers/SP3. Your USB ports may be flakey due to your install methodology.

No problem. Hell I'm as dumb as a rock, but than again, I'm only 12.
All of them. The most important being the Mobo drivers.

Well tomorrow I'll try wiping it and reinstalling again. I thank you for your helpful information.
Would you tell me where the system error logs are located?

just an off thought as I have no idea what your problems entail however, the XP SP3 update may cause some issue and you may consider not updating that one. To my understanding, it was a cumulative update with some developer additions thrown in. for me, I didn't need the additions or desire to install all those updates that I had previously declined.

You do have a problem there angus. You've seemed to have checked everything except your inpurt devices (keyboard and mouse), memory and the motherborad.
I can't offer any real help, have you been able to search the web for an ansser or help in troubleshooting the problem?
