Where are the skins for WB v7?

Wednesday, July 22, 2009 by Mark Phelps | Discussion: WindowBlinds

I just extended my OD subscription, entirely to be able to get the WB 7 beta.  I have an old tablet PC, using an Intel 915GM chipset -- which does not support Aero.  I've been running WB 6 on this box under Vista since it came out and have been happy with the results.

This morning, I installed impulse and then installed WB 7, but when it runs, there are no skins to choose from.  So, I dowloaded one at random from the site, and installed it.  But, it did not show up in the skin list and when I checked Impuse again, it said that WB 6 was now also installed.  It also hosed up the display so that now, even Vista Basic doesn't show anymore.  So, I removed WB 6 -- only to see that it removed WB 7 as well.

So now, I've installed WB 7 again, but again, there are no skins.

I ordered this in to test it on my tablet PC, but can't do that if there are no skins available.  So, where do I find skins for WB 7?

Nope -- not turned off any services.

OK, if there's no apparent "fix" for this, what do I have to do to open a trouble ticket with the support folks?

E-mail them at [email protected].

You may already have, but if not try this......uninstall Windowblinds > reboot > turn off any anti-virus/anti-spyware & firewall > reinstall via Impulse > reboot > make sure to turn security software back on........

OK, folks.  I'm going to do two things ...

First, i'm going to (temporarily) remove the WB 6 stuff from the shared volume and wipe out the contents of the local folder. Then, I'm going to reinstall Impulse and WB 7 (this time, without any WB 6 skins) and see what happens.

Second, if that fails (and I suspect it will), then I'll reinstall a second time with AV and Firewall disabled.

Will post results of both here.

Vista is installed on this machine as well. I'm guessing that what Impulse is doing when I install WB 7 is detecting the WB 6 files in the Vista partition, installing them in Seven, and installing WB 6 to handle those files.

Er...you have Vista AND Windows 7 on the one drive....[in different partitions]...but 'think' one install [of Windowblinds] may be confusing the other?  Do you KNOW for sure which partition and file system and 'my documents', etc you're actually dealing with?

When 2 operating systems are 'visible' to each other you can have all sorts of fun....as you seem to be noticing...

shared volume

You mean...shared with both Vista and Win 7?

Here's the most current situation ...

Was running WB6 on Vista.  Installed WBA files to separate partition. Did that because I was doing weekly partition backups and didn't want to backup the skins every single time.  At that time, there was only one OS on this box - Vista. That partition can be read by any OS on the box now -- Seven or Vista.

Downloaded & installed Impulse.  Opened Impulse, selected WB 7 & installed it.  Appeared to go OK. Rebooted.

Started WB 7. Noticed that only three skins displayed properly in the panel (Classic, Aero, Random).  Other skins showed as "unknown" and did not display a rendering in the config panel.  When I clicked on the "unknown"s, got the names of the WB6 skins.  Selecting a skin and applying it forced me into Windows Classic mode with no visual effects.

Posted to this forum. Got links to 4 WB 7 skins.  Downloaded & installed them. Rebooted.

Same symptoms with the new WB 7 skins. Selecting any WB 7 skin forced me into Windows Classic again.

Opened Impuse, uninstalled WB 7.  When done, Seven Basic desktop returned ( video chip doesn't support Aero).  Opened Impuse, noticed that WB 6 was uninstalled as well, even though I didn't request that.

Copied all the WB 6 skins from the shared partition to an external drive.  Removed them from the internal drive.  Uninstalled WB 7 -- which uninstalled WB 6 as well.  Went into C: drive, removed all the WB skins and directories.  Didn't touch the registry, though. Rebooted.

Latest (yesterday):Made sure that there were NO WB skins on the internal drives anymore. Reinstalled WB 7 using Impulse. Rebooted. Noticed that (1) WB 6 got installed as well, (2) WB directory has folders for ALL the previous WB 6 skins as well as the four WB 7 skins. Looks like it's squirreling them away SOMEWHERE so that it's reloading them after a reinstall.

So basically, I'm back to square 1.  Don't appear to be able to install only WB 7, and I'm guessing that the co-install of WB 6 (which I believe does NOT work with Windows Seven) is at the heart of the problems.

(1) WB 6 got installed as well

Impulse will show both 6 and 7 as installed when just 7 is.

Uninstall WB from both OS, run something like CCleaner, install 7 on both, 7 does have Vista updates and runs perfect for me on XP.

Installed WBA files to separate partition.

I don't think it's going to work if you try to share the files between the 2 installs.

Try putting them in the default directory for EACH OS "C:\users\public\public documents\stardock\windowblinds" for Vista probably similar for W7 but virtually a different "C" drive

suggest you get a better Backup utility.......most will allow you to exclude certain drives, folders or files

Best way to 'backup' your WB skins is to copy them to a non-OS drive/partition....that is not going to be caught up in some OS Imaging/restore....and then Install WB [the proggy] into any/each OS install separately and independently....then copy/paste the WB skins into each OS's default skin location [as Lantec suggested.].

If/when you reinstall an OS you then continue to copy/paste the WB skins where they are wanted.

If you point to a shared location in each OS the chances are the partitions could be named differently and thus their address is lost....

No improvements!!  Installed WB 7 in Vista.  Installed OK.  Skins work just fine.

Uninstalled WB 6 & WB 7 from Seven. Uninstalled Impulse. Ran CC Cleaner. Reinstalled Impule. Reinstalled WB 7.

Same results as before -- skins are in the proper folders but don't show up in the preview panel properly.

Imported the 4 WB 7 skins,  Did Rebuild List.

Same results as before.

So basically, it appears that WB 7 just plain does not work on my machine under Seven.

I have too have noted that when you install WB7, it also installs a WB6 icon or entry as well.  It doesn't seem to affect the way the program functions on my machine, ecept if I happen to use the system tray icon to open WB. Then it pops up a copy of the beta1 interface instead of the beta2.

Don't forget that we're working with a beta!  If something can go wrong, it will!

Yes, this is a beta version to test, be patient to wait for the official release and enjoy  .

Just a FYI: A double click will bring up the old interface. A right click and selecting " Configure WindowBlinds" will launch the new one.
