Start menu moves a couple of inches to the right when testing in Vista

Sunday, July 5, 2009 by Imzadi | Discussion: SkinStudio Help

I've sent a new skin I'm working on to several different people to test on Vista. In each instance the entire start menu moves about 2 inches over to the right, and the bottom is slightly behind the taskbar. Each one was on a laptop, and I don't know if that's the issue or not. Has anybody had this issue before? Is there something I can do as far as settings go in Skinstudio to fix this?

Oh and btw, I'm creating the skins on an XP machine.

Thanks!

Hi Imzadi. More importantly, what were the OS's of the laptops and were they using WB6 or WB7beta? I have a Vista laptop if that would help?

They were testing it for me in Vista, since I don't have a Vista machine anymore.  Both were using WB6.

I'm just curious as to what would cause this. On one computer I could see something odd happening, but the same thing on two different ones?

I agree. That's a tad bizarre. I think you need Xiandi, 2of3, AVMan or v's help....a skinner at any rate. You made it the same way as always?

Yep, start menu the same size as I have made them in the past.  The only thing I can figure is that maybe there was a problem with installation or something. I'm baffled.

I dont have a laptop, but I do have Vista.  I can at least see if it is doing it on a PC. You can send it to me if you like.

And here's what it's supposed to look like. This is on XP.

Got it. The start menu is sitting just fine on my PC, so it's not a Vista problem.

Cool window frames, and a nice color scheme too.

I'll be sending you and email shortly..

The OS may have moved it if it felt it would not fit on the screen.  I would check your part sizes and content margins.

Hi Neil.

I made my parts the same size I always do, and content margins were the first thing I checked. Not sure what's up. It may just be a laptop problem. The widescreen seems to throw it off or something.

you need to try negative bottom content margins for the places side...get rid of that wasted space and maybe the start menu will settle in.(for Vista sub)

You mean to set the bottom painting margin at 0 on the Places image? I only had it set on 1

Text margines.

-40 seems to work for me

Its an odd little vista/WB bug that causes a large space to be left under the run command(if you have it)...like these other skinners said...its generally around -40.

Oh you're serious! LOL I thought you were kidding. Well heck, I already submitted the skin.

Won't that throw the text off in XP then?

Nevermind...tried it and it didn't.

Thanks guys, who knew? Not me, obviously.
