LogonStudio 1.5 Released

Stardock is excited to release LogonStudio 1.5.  LogonStudio is an application that allows you to easily change the Windows logon screen in Windows Vista.  There are thousands of logons available for download from WinCustomize.com, and creating your own logon is as easy as dragging and dropping an image into LogonStudio.

This update includes:

  • Right-click context menu on logons 
  • Easily set current wallpaper as a logon
  • Various bug fixes

More info and a free download is available at www.logonstudio.com.  LogonStudio can also be downloaded and updated via Stardock’s Impulse, which can be downloaded from www.impulsedriven.com.

Being able to easily set your current wallpaper as your Logon rocks.  I also love the way it detects the Windows default wallpapers for use as logons!

Does the new context menu require you to generate your old logon from scratch, or does that get added automagically to your existing logons?

I've been using the original version 1.0 as I had problems with the previous update - the Load/Save function was reporting corrupt memory on my PC. Just updated via Impulse to this new version and glad to report that the Load/Save options are now working normally. The updating itself was flawless and it preserved all my skins to boot.

The context menu applies to all logons, though you can't save or delete the built-in ones (these functions do not make sense for them). Dragging and dropping logons and pictures to the main window (and logons from the window) should continue to work.

As a bonus, we have provisional support for Windows 7 in this build, including its wallpapers. Those who preferred the Windows 7 Beta wallpapers can copy the files from \Windows\Web\Wallpaper in a a Windows 7 Beta installation to the same folder in Windows 7 RC1, then install the Windows 7 Beta Wallpaper Pack.

Excellent!  Just three more Stardock applications (namely Windowblinds, IconPackager, and DeskScapes--as Fences, ObjectDock+, Multiplicity, and now LogoStudio seem to work on W7 RC) before I can safely upgrade my Vista 64 machine to Windows 7 64.  8)

The Download.com link says the last time the file was updated, was in 2007.. and still version 1.0.

We're using Impulse.  I doubt download.com is in the loop on the new version yet...

I like the new updates on the Stardock suite. Unfortunately, I have to express my disappointment that XP users such as me still use a program that looks like it was from the 90's.

Download.com takes a few days (up to a few weeks) to update.

I don't think that ones been updated since 2005.   I guess those of us that use XP are left out in the cold.

As far as I can tell it's Logon Studio Vista which is just for Vista.

Sometimes Stardock surprises me, so who knows. On the other hand, the old Logon Studio even with its warts does get the logon screen skinned which is really the whole point. [shrugs]

Yeah I was surprised that Seven support was not mentioned earlier in the piece given the logon layout is virtually identical to Vista.

Windows 7 support is not highly promoted because it is preliminary. We have been burned before on pre-releases. For example, we had to redo all of the default wallpaper-based logons for the RC1 release.

XP support is on the future features list, but it's at a low priority given that there's a fully-featured (if retro) program available. Our main goal there is to provide feature parity, so that you can use new-format logons on XP as you can on Vista/7.

Incidentally, Microsoft has gone out of its way to find interesting wallpapers this time. Most have a story behind them, and you can find out more by searching on the title and author of the piece. My personal favourites are the shot of Keoneloa Bay in Hawaii, and Melbourne's City Link toll road, though I also loved the photograph of stuffed Bunnies in the beta.
