Windows7 rc

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 by DaveBax | Discussion: Personal Computing

I'm ready to mess around with windows7. I have a new second hard drive installed on my computer and it's clean. Can I install 7 on it and leave my orginal hard drive without losing the OS (Vista) or anything from it? If yes, can I dual boot with the install of windows7 on the other drive? Any other information would be appreciated.

Yes you can Install Windows7 without harming Vista and yes to the dual doot question, works great. Watch that windows7 doesn't unactivate Vista tho, but reentering your product key will sort that problem for you.

Hi...You sure can Dave.  The file you downloaded is an ISO file so use Power ISO to extract it to a folder on your desktop. Once that is done right click on the setup and run as Administrator. You will have an option to update or do a custom installation.  Do a custom installation. This will let you install to your partition.  Have fun with Windows 7100 RC. I got it last week on the 30th. works great ....

Thanks Peter. I have a Dell and it came with a complete vista install disk I think dell burns in the product key. Will I need additional software or when I boot the computer will it ask me which OS to load? What I would really like to do is ust my new drive and partition it and do a clean install of vista and 7 on it. Than take my first drive and clean it. Guess I would have to clean (delete ity first. If you say the first way I asked about will work I can always do the other part later.

I already have it burned to a disk and tested it. I know it works. Thanks

Dave,

There certainly would not be a problem installing both OS's to the same physical HDD, which would enable you to clean your old one. Windows7 will install a boot loader which will enable to to select the OS you want to use whenever the PC is switched on/restarted via windows. If you get any problems, please feel free to pm me and I'll help wherever I can, (though you shouldn't need any help, it's a straightforward and painless process).

Regards, Peter
