Enough Log On and boot screens already
Thursday, January 29, 2009 by G4E | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
Hi, Is there any way that we can limit what cetegories we see in the gallery. It seems that whenever I go to new submissions in the gallery I have to wade through every wallpaper ever produced that is now a log on or boot screen before I find the original stuff.

As a moderator I will do things the way Stardock/Wincustomize staff wants them done.
Personally, I think it would be a good idea to limit the number of uploads a person can make per day to certain galleries (logons & bootskins).
Some of the "ported" wallpapers are coming in literally by the dozens and flooding the queue and once released flooding the Galleries.

You can look in each individual gallery on the right hand side of the WC home page. The newest uploads are displayed first. I agree with Lantec. There should be a limit on the number of uploads a person can submit per day.

Agreed. There should be a limit. There should also be a 'handle' so that skins can be classified in the future should that be decided.
Question: I wanted to do a bootskin of "Prowler" but there's no place to put a "permission" that I can see and so I didn't ask vStyler/Tiggs for the permission and abandoned the idea. When there's more than one artist involved, who should one ask?

I answered your PM Doc, but let me answer here too......hope I don't give out bad info cause I haven't used the bootskin upload...........If you upload something that needs to have permission attached the preferable way is to put the skin and the permission text file into a zip file and upload the zip.
NORMALLY.....When there's more than one artist involved I would look at the author of the first released skin.
From my viewpoint permission on Prowler would need to come from John since John is selling the skin on his site. That at least gives the appearance of "ownership" However, if you find a comment from John which refers to his getting permission from Tiggz then he (Tiggz) would be the one to approach. That would be the case with something like Plas Fan where I believe John's work was based on/derived from Tiggz Iconpackage.
edit: should've mentioned that if in a case like Plas Fan, you used graphics from the Windowblind to create something then you would need both individuals permission.

Yeah, it is a bit diriculous (deliberate Zubish) that one person could have 48 + logon/bootskin items on the front page out of the 100. Yup, counted 'em up yesterday when I noticed a gazzillion boots/logons and little else for the other combined galleries...
So yeah, some kind of a limit per day/couple of days would be preferable to that, especially for people with slower internet connections who don't want to be bothered going to pages 3, 4, 5, and 6 to view new 'other' skins when they have 20 - 25 skins per page selected to help reduce slow loading, etc.

1. Thanks for your thorough answer (as usual) Lantec! ![]()
2. The reason I am in favor of the limit was alluded to by starkers: Uploading many skins at one time would push other artists' work into oblivion and those creations would never be seen nor appreciated.

I totally agree. I think it would be better if people just uploaded their own original work instead of uploading someone else's entire gallery.

...so who do we have to submit a request to in order to change the policy of upload restrictions to?
Reply #10 Thursday, January 29, 2009 6:00 PM
As much as I would hate to see uploads limited, I agree. It's frustraiting to see an original piece of work get pushed off the page before it has a chance to shine.
There should be a limit set for how many an author can have posted to a main gallery per day and then push the rest that was submitted to thier personal page.
They could resubmit the overflow posts to a main gallery on another day or have a system in place where they would be automaticly approved for a main gallery, if they qualify, on the next day so the Mods wouldn't have to review it a second time.
That should discourage an author from flooding a gallery.

This is also correct. As the Permission Must come from the Originating author, all subsequent artists become "porter's" when they use Graphics from the Original Skin/theme. If a skin you are making Is from a "Ported" skin, then you must obtain permission from both the original author as well as the Porting artist your works are being derived from.
In all cases the Orignating artist's permissions will need to be inplace, unless said Artist has released his works to GNU or public licence , where you would need to add the Licence agreement to the Dowload by adding it to the skins file download In zip form, and follow all terms of the licence.
** What follows intended for artists who are porting "other artists" full libraries of works to WC, NOT folks who are colaborating on a suite.** ----> *** It should be protocall that when you are porting other peoples works, try to only up a couple at a time to each gallery. This way you are not pushing other artists, who have Taken hours or days to build a Original skin off the Main page. It's simply a matter of Neticate.*

why would you think there was more than one creator of "Prowler"...?
Two XP bootskins done...for those of you still using...real bootskins....
Reply #14 Thursday, January 29, 2009 7:37 PM
I'll make it simple, I created all the Prowler graphics, wasn't a collaborative effort. Any and all permissions should and must go through me.
On Plas Fan, I created all, 100% original graphics for the WB , Tiggz 100% on icons... any permissions received from him or I were a direct result of intellectual property rules and courtesy's. Permissions need to be sought from both...for any plas fan additions.

yeah.....
I just checked out the Vista Bootskin gallery....wow.....trouble is...there doesn't seem to be any expertise or much time needed to make a Vista Logon or Vista Bootskin...from what I've read...slotting in walls.....unlike XP...where you spend more time building and tweaking them....and no way that dude would be putting so many in at once in the XP galllery...unless he stockpiled for awhile....
I agree...put a clamp on the logons and bootskins....for numbers of uploads.....but in Vista galleries only.....or make 'em more of a challenge and more interesting to make....

How many years have I been saying that? It just falls on deaf ears.
This site is supposed to promote skinning, but how many times does the genuine skinner here get pissed on?

No doubt you and WebGizmos have been saying that, but no one sees those isolated replies or posts, even if frequent, and there isn't currently a "White Paper" or unified policy statement (that I've seen) to govern what in all honesty is a matter of "Netiquette" (Zubished by HG_E).
Thanks HG_E for confirming what Lantec wrote to me.
