Does any one really use ObjectMedia (DXplayer)?

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 by Murex | Discussion: DesktopX

I'm curious does any one really use the Object Media player that skinners supply with their DXthemes. I run Vista and it seems like more and more of the components of the player have stopped working. Along with a few other things that doesn't work such as the system tray. Hopefully stardock will fix the system tray but they haven't really done any thing with the Object Media player and I doubt they will.

So should a skinner take the time and effort to include it in their themes?

I don't really use it, myself, but I've always included it. I have to say that as MS continues to upgrade the functionality of Windows, some of these options, such as taskbar, systemtray and media player, don't seem very useful other than to give those components a different look....and that's what WB is for, IMO.

I doubt I'll include those components in any upcoming themes.

Yep, old player..no drag and drop support, volumebar trans..etc.

So, I like that but, need some other function like on xion.. but I'm always include for my themes too

Not for me.

Like a lot of other apps, DesktopX, Right-click etc., updates are definitely needed.

I have always included DXplayer in my themes and I used to use it. I don't know if it's because I am on vista but I have been having trouble getting volume and balance working. I think it used to work before I went to SP1 but I can't remember for sure. I know that I could get system tray to work before I installed SP1.

If I can get the volume to work I may include the basic player but I doubt that I will include the equalizer and other features any more. I have been thinking of learning how to skin the Xion player and include it in my themes but then it would only work if  the person downloading had it installed.

Thanks for your comments

Knowing that the player will work is a nice advantage . . but it isn't very feature rich at the moment.

I use the DX players in my themes, but I set it to use my default media player, not object media. I don't even install object media. DX player will use your choice of several media players installed on your system. I almost always use one of my media players when playing music. But then, I don't care about visualizations, and such. I do not understand how to use active x controls to make better media players. I would like to add an equalizer to my media players.

I dont use it because I dont listen music too often and it cant play music in .aac format which I mostly have.

Better to give more importance on other parts of your theme. Rarely someone will be using it.

When I try to use WMP or WinAmp I can't get menu function to work. AS far as the equalizer part that's all built into the DXplayer and so far that part does work for me. I have the equalizer included in the MRX4 theme take a look at it to see how it was made. If you have any questions I would be glad to help out.

I am on Vista SP1 and volume and balance work for me.

Thank you for that information. Now I know it will work on SP1

I kinda thought that was the way it is but I thought I would find out what other skinners and users thought.

A few other componets need to be fixed. system tray for one and it would be nice to see updates to mail and recycle bin.

Without using activex controls?

You choose each part of the equalizer the same way you build your volume, balance, play, pause controls. you will find your gain under fader/ slider along with bandwith and center.

I started to add it just for people who do use it. I am sure its not many people though.

I just made my first Xion player to match my last skin. I love it!! It works so much better then the DXplayer so that's what I will be making from now on to go with my skins.

How hard is Xion to skin? Do you need to know script or code? BTW, congrats on the promo!

Each control is a seperate layer named for a control.

If I can make one, you can.

Thanks Jim for the congrats.. Nope you don't need scripts. If you can use layers and groups make graphics and read you can skin Xion. And it's a lot more fun and you can do more with it then the DXplayer. If you want to try it and hit a rough spot I'll be glad to help any way I can.
