Want a new WC sub/Renewal? ... Reply here

A little effort to raise funds for our own WC

Thursday, January 8, 2009 by BX | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Hi Fellows!

As you know that we are having a WC Sub Drive going on! To give a bit of help I offer a new WC or renewal to the 150th poster in this thread! There is no bounds of the topic! Just speak what-so-ever you want but keep withing ethical limits! No flaming and no personal attacks!

So here we go!

I'll be blunt;

WC is not a community in itself. It's more a skindatabase with a few community features added. 95% of what makes the community is what's going on in the forums, which is not at all a small thing, it's awesome. So, basically, the community is pretty much unaffected by the outcome of this fund raising. Buying WC subscriptions only affects the 5% of this community that is directly related to access of skins. So, I'm not worried about the future of the community...

I think WC is better off being run by SD though, because I've seen plenty of evidence that its not able to maintain a reasonable standard on its own (slow pageloads and other technical issues). With a million users it shouldn't be hard to get enough money to pay for the upkeep. But why is it so slow? The subscriptions are commercially advertised and sold. It gives the impression of a commercially funded site, not user funded. "Donate $35 or more to get the benefits for a year, and help the upkeep of the site" would likely bring in more cash than the current "Buy a subscription for $39.95 to get the benefits for a year".

I can't afford a WC subscription now, and I really don't think it gives any added value to me as a ODNT subscriber. If the site was donation driven, I could donate $15-$25 though.. I think there are lots of people in the same situation.

I'm gonna try to make something happen here.... my luck works in funny ways.

If I get a job with one of the 3 comapnies I am stalking and this thread makes it to 1000 posts, I'll throw in an object desktop ultimate sub. Expires at the end of the sub drive though. As I'll be homelss round then.... I love camping.

mickeko .... Wincustomize.com IS commercially funded. One specific company pays for its existence, namely Stardock.

What is WANTED is for the site to be self-supporting/funded....from sufficient Subscriptions, etc to pay for the substantial costs of the site.

If only every single user popped $1 'on the fridge' each time they visited/made use of the site then more than just Frogboy would be swanning around in a 50 meter yacht [and no, he doesn't, either - it's a joke].

Most people tend to overlook the real cost of a site of this size/popularity.  It's huge....

That's fairly unlikely to happen though...There's really not enough non-stardock content to REALLY be worth the fairly high subscription cost, and a wincustomize subscription doesn't really appeal much to most ODNT subscribers, because we get unlimited download anyway. Applying those facts indicates that the target for the subscriptions are those who bought WB standalone or don't have an ongoing OD subscription, I have a feeling that's substantially less people than the million users of the site. So it's fair to say that Stardock indirectly has dug this hole for WC.
