Graphics software for skinning

Friday, October 31, 2008 by TheD2JBug | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

hello there. I'm looking for ideas for graphics software for skinning.

I have an old 'borrowed' copy of PSP7 that is showing it's age and is less than stable. So I'm looking to go legit and buy/download a legitimate copy of a new photo-editing software I can use to work on Winamp classic skins. I've tried a few and my results were as follows.

Paint.net: I don't like the interface. It seems I have to move between tabbed windows to work on multiple images ( which I do a lot when working on Winamp Classic skins.

The GIMP: I can't work around it's interface Multiple windows

GIMPShop: I found it worse then PSP for stability.

I'd like to know some opinions and sources of decent photo-editing software. This is a casual enterprise for me , so Photoshop is a no go ( $1k ... no ). Details and linkage would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried ArtWeaver?

http://www.artweaver.de/index.php?en_version

It's free.

I would recommend Paint Shop Pro XI, you can get it on Impulse.

I agree, and , I know you said no, but Photoshop and PSP 10 are all I use.

Like ID said.. PSP probably best bet at a reasonable price.

PSP 10 seems more geared for photo-editing than skinning. PSP7 seemed more well rounded. Am I getting the wrong idea?

The Corel Draw series has become a favorite choice around the designs that come out as well.

PhotoImpact is also a great skinning app if you can get used to the UI.

Has an excellent pen tooling section and a better bevel\ lighting engine than PS layer styles.

Speaking of which I'm waiting for the boss at work to approve my purchase of Creative Suite 4 with cs4 from Adobe.

Thus the real way to go for the investment. Then the new Corel Draw Graphics Suite 4 to go along with that one and I'll be set to go - maybe - unless Stardock comes up with something new too!

But if your on a budget - go with PSP X2 and be happy with it - it is a very good program and will do most of what you want!

I did a walkthrough of PSP not too long ago.

For less than $100, it's a steal for the quality it delivers.

Yah I ordered it from Amazon ( it was cheaper than through Impulse thanks to the .ca to .us conversion)

There's a new Windows and OD coming soon..

But seriously, Fireworks is an easy to learn but very powerful tool for graphics. You should really try out the demo at the site of Adobe.
