.uis files

missing from skins

Tuesday, October 28, 2008 by suzyq1 | Discussion: WindowBlinds

Hello to all.  My name is Suzanna and I can't seem to download visual styles from wincustomize.  I get an error message that "there appears to be no .UIS file in skin package...are you sure it is a windowblinds skin?".  I have not been able to download icons in icon packager, or anything else at all since purchasing windowblinds.  I bought the extreme version which came with a bonus wincustomize subscription.  I also purchased Impulse. The few skins I have gotten to apply were only successful after my husband, the computer dink, performed one of his "I will not be beaten down!" workarounds.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Suzanna

No uis can be indicative of a corrupted download or the extension should really be .zip instead of .wba, etc due to having other items in the file (some have extras zipped in)

1st - try renaming the file to .zip ( whatever.wba = whatever.zip) and see what's in it

if nothings in it, it's corrupted - if you're using a download manager - don't

what OS?

what method of download (download to save or open?)

what browser?

I dont know how to change the file extension because I download thru Windowblinds by adding visual styles.  I select the "download from Wincustomize.com".  I browse the gallery and when I see one I like I click on the download link.  Then it takes me to a page with a big red "DOWNLOAD NOW" button.  I click on the button, it does its thing, and comes back at me with that error message.

I am running Windows XP Pro Sp2.  As for my browser I dont know what that is and I also don't know if I am using a download manager or not.  Geez. am I dumber than a box of rocks or what?!!!  I don't know how to skin I just liked the idea of changing my desktop so I purchased what I thought I needed to do it.  I am not very computer  literate so I  need things explained in laymen terms so I can comprehend what I need to do to resolve my problem.

Thanks again for being so kind to put your time into helping me.  You rock!

When you hit the "download from Wincustomize.com" button, and the webpage opens... do you see "WindowBlinds" at the top of the web page, with the little picture of the painters palette on top of a small grey square?  All the gallery entries on that page should have that icon in the lower right corner of the little picture.

Just makin' sure they're all WindowBlinds files.  Right now, you should see things like "Broken Aero ver1.1" and "Data 22XP" as possible skins.  Is this right?

And on top of that...  try downloading the skins straight from the website, like you are but don't do it through windowblinds by hitting the "download from Wincustomize.com" button.

I did exactly this and it worked for me. with no problems...

I will say the Error the OP is recieving is a new one to me. Would prolly be a good Idea to Email Support@Stardock.com stating exactly what is happening, as well as your system info from Windowblinds System info tab.

Sorry for the delay in replying back.  Yes, I do see the image you asked about and the WB box it appears in.  I also see the skins mentioned.  As for down loading right from the web sight, I aa don't know for sure if I have tried that way but I would bet that I have, since I have been trying for over a week every day for hours.  I will try now just to make sure I have exhausted all resources.  I will let you know soon.

Having switched to a new hard drive recently, I've gotten the same messages. In my case it turns out that its a permission/security issue. Having to go in and take ownership of files & folders as I need them before I can do anything with 'em. Theoretically, when I changed the permissions on the drive itself & subfolders & contents, it should have done everything but that didn't work anywhere near what it should've. So, you can have the same trouble from a different root issue if you've gone to a new drive and are trying to retrieve 'em from the old drive.

O.K., I tried to download directly from WC website and still the same problem.  I started out this morning swearing to myself that I wasn't going to get tripped up in this issue again until later tonight when I was through with all the site maps I was supposed to be working on for my business.  Of course I couldn't control the urge to just try once more.  Now look at me.............over 4.5 hours later and my work is not even started and here I am stuck on stupid again with this @$%^&*! crap!!!  I want my money back! I am so fu--ing frustrated and disgusted with this and myself for allowing it to side-track me to the extent that I have blown off everything else and have glued my ass to my f-ing chair trying to fix this software problem.  forget it!  Aaaggghhhh!

Make sure that the files end in .wba, they shouldnt be in a zip,  If you can not see the file extension then go into any explorer window and chose Tools > Folder options > View Tab > and UN-check "Hide extensions for known file types"...

This will let u see and rename any file's extension. if the skin is .zip.. you must extract it from the zip if you have a .wba inside the zip or rename it to .wba if inside the .zip there are a bunch of diff. files.

Once you have a Valid .wba file all you should have to do is click it to install it. OR browse to it from within WBconfig and add it there.

Are you able to apply default skins from the wbconfig interface? Is WB actually working on your PC?

If not, I suggest un-installing and re-installing WB. After a restart... try again.

If when you click on the download button and the download comes in a .zip or .rar try extracting the files out into a separate folder.  When trying to install files that are compressed they may not be read properly.

I don’t know how to change the file extension

To change the file extension you need to make sure that can see the extension type.  In order to do this you need open an explorer windows (ie: my computer, my documents) and at the top where it says file, edit, view etc.   Click on tools then go to folder options.  When the window opens up, click on the “view” tab and in the window look for “hide extensions for known file types” make sure this box is unchecked.  Then you should be able to see the file extension at the end of each file.  The file extension is generally the three letters after the period in the file.  Just like .com at the end of a web address.  So you should be able to see .wba or.zip or .rar at the end.

I have experienced this before.  I alleviated the problem by uninstalling Windowblinds and reinstalled and I also do install through Windowblinds.  Windowblinds will recognize the download and automatically and open and install the skin.  I also have seen the .uis error when dealing with a corrupt or damaged .wba file

To uninstall a program I use a program called Revo Uninstaller,

Revo Uninstaller is a freeware innovative uninstall utility much faster than Windows Add/Remove applet. With its advanced and fast algorithm, Revo Uninstaller scans before and after you uninstall an application. After the program's regular uninstaller runs, you can remove additional unnecessary files, folders and registry keys that are usually left over on your computer. Even if you have a broken installation, Revo Uninstaller scans for an application's data on your hard disk drives and in the Windows registry and shows all found files, folders and registry items so you can delete them.

This little puppy is awesome.  Especially when I am going to do a reinstall because it wipes out any instant of the program being there before.

Please go to the Windowblinds configuration screen and click the system info tab there. Then click the copy text button to the upper right and come back here to this forum and on the reply screen here use the crtl + V keys to paste the info here and post it for us. I dont know how to change the file extension

If you can see the file extensions (that after the '.' as in picture.jpg, whatever.wba, etc) when you open a folder, then after you download a windowblind skin and save to your desktop (or anywhere you can find it) and it downloads as a .zip - all you have to do is right click on it and choose 'rename' - the the name gets highlighted with box around it - left click in the box and move the cursor over to the right of the '.' - press the delete key to delete the extension then type in the extension you want - then click away from the file and you will get a warning message asking you to be sure, click ok

if you can't see the file extension, then see reply #9 above
