Wish list
Thursday, September 25, 2008 by ZubaZ | Discussion: Fences Beta
- Rather than not showing an icon when there is space for half an icon to show, show part of it blending out.
- Allow for a default scroll bar. Either the whole fence should be skinned or skin-support should be able to be disabled.
- This is a doozy. I get used to the groupings on my desktop and then when I have to oepn Windows Explorer for whatever reason (say to upload a file) I have my mindset on Fence groupings and lo and behold . . my files are not grouped. Hook into Explore to group by Fence.

Another wish. I wish you could sort the icons in a fence so that they would be in some order.
Thanks,

Here's my little list:
1) The fences snap to the bottom and top of my screen, but not the sides. That would be useful.
2) Custom fence background textures.
3) A prettier scrollbar, I don't know if this is just me, but I'm just getting the classic windows scrollbar.
Tell you what though, my 130ish icons are looking a lot better now...

A "hot activation" of icons option - single click or hoven+single click might be nice.
Assign a hotkey to individual fences to bring them to the front (like Windows-D but for just that fence).
Double click on a fence title to open all icons within that fence (hmm, could get messy).
What I'm aiming for here is Fences as not just a better way of organising your icons but a better way of activating them too.
(Oh, and steal the icon-grow code from ObjectDock or IconX when no-ones looking).

thomassen started a thread (prob didn't know of this one), in short a "roll up feature". Just thought I'd be 'lumper' in this case.

Some good ideas here, fellas! Keep up the good work. We might even get an OS out of it if we can get OD+ and Right Click into it too! ![]()

1+, "roll up feature", maybe even rolling up to an icon. Before I saw fences I was cleaning by moving shortcuts into folders, wishing I could open the folders on the desktop, this could come close to the same effect.
Optional Fading/Hiding of background when locking fences.

is "skinnability" a word?.. well if not, I'm making it one.
My wish is to be able to do more to skin fences than just mess with color and transparency. my windowblinds right now govern the scroll bars, which is great, but I think it would be fun to have the option to create split rail, chain link, wrought iron, electric fences occasionally.
not being able to do that, it would be nice if the "skin" of the fence would correspond to the windowblind or compliment it better.

I still want to be able to make a fence load a dx gadget/widget that would be so cool to clcik and its there, then its gone with the desktop, etc. Just an idea.

I wish that there's be a hotkey option that would bring all icons and fences float on top of all windows. Like you can do with DesktoppX gadgets. I made a desktop shortcut theme in DX which I found the F10 key very nice to bring the shortcuts infront. Allowed me access to the desktop without minizing or hiding windows.
Also: being able to spesify the label font + size.

If possible, it'd be nice if Fences could load before the desktop icons are shown so that you only seen them inside their fence. WB loads nicely when you log on so you never see the switch.

The second beta has been great. The first one was a bit too unstable to work on my messed up laptop but I have had no problems at all with beta 2.
The default fences are great. The recent items fence would be fun if that one was auto updated by what was actually recently used as time goes on.
Skinability would be nice but I worry over performance of that. If skins were just too much of a load, I'd like to be able to assign colors/transparency seperately to title bar, border, scrollbar, and background. Tinting each fence seperately would be nice.
Then there's stuff I'd like to see stolen from EverQuest II. Define the mouse over and mouse out transparency of all the items individually ( border, title, icons, fence background, etc... ). Icon Size/Icon spacing per fence would be a nice theft as well. Lock a each fence location individually. Lock a each dock icon contents. Go find an EQII player and ask them if you can play with thier back pack display settings.
Now for the fun ones. I would love to see different 'view as' options in each fence. Thumbnail, filmstrip, details (with sorting). Arrange icons by whatever in each fence would be great.
Keep up the great work!

I agree that being able to customize the colors and possibly skinning the Fences would be VERY nice.
And I also would LOVE to see them be able to roll up to just the title bars.
But, would also be a nice add-on if individual Fences could be opened from a titlebar state rather than all of them opening completely each time you dbl-click the screen. Seems when I open Fences my whole clutter is back, well, ALOT more organized, but, you get the point.. Seems would be a cleaner look if when Fences opened on the desktop by the dbl-click they should open to titlebars then each Fence open completely on either mouseover or titlebar click. In this fashion the disaster I call a desktop would not only stay cleaner, but, would be more controllable for choices.
Am I making sense? .. hope so sorry if I sound deluded. Just an idea.
