Rating Skins

No can do

Monday, September 22, 2008 by BigDogBigFeet | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I am unable to rate skins.  It says I have to be at least an Apprentice or a Subscriber.  I'm both and I was logged in properly.  Help please.

Was using FF3 native mode

and tried FF3 with IETab active.

so far problem has persisted for a few days on all skins.

I think this is a known problem, seen it in the forums several times.  Can't remember if it's a FF problem or not.  I use IE8 Beta now and have not seen the problem.

Ok, I'll try IE7 and see if that will work

hasn't worked for me for weeks, in ff3, but was working the nite before last when I downloaded a skin and almost rated it a 1 because it got in the way again(remember that thread I posted regarding where the rating dropdown ends up!?)

No, using IE7 doesn't change anything for me.  I am unable to rate skins using any of the following browsers.

SDC

IE7

FF3

Those are the only three I have and since none of them work so it's some sort of site problem.  And, yes I've cleared the cache, deleted the history, cleared the cookies and none of it fixes the problem.

I'll have to wait for a site fix.

I switched from IE7 to FF3 for this very problem

Here's some things to try

Log out

Clear your browser cache (Ctrl+F5) then close it.

Open CCleaner, scan with it,but don't clean with it yet.

Then go to CCleaner options, cookies, mark all cookies as cookies to delete

Return to the cleaner section and clean out everything.

Close CCleaner and log back on to WC

This works for me to get IE7 working again,FF3 rarely messes up but the same works for it.

Good luck

Well, I don't know I just 100% deleted everything in IE7, closed it, restarted it went immediately to the skin I wanted to rate was able to finally rate it.  Came back to this post had to log in now all I've got for my efforts are the GD Google ads again.  Whatever, they have in the way of coding for this site there are issues that persist.

Especially as far as BUGS and Google ads showing up whenever they want to.  Not being able to rate skins.  Having to clear everything out of the browser anytime you want to try to get something to work just causes the relentless Google ads to show up again even though I'm logged in.

I personally believe these problems are most likely the direct result of all the various companies attempting to stuff my browser with their cookies the moment I make contact with any web site on the net.  I bet that for anyone here you can 100% flush your browser out visit just any one web site and you'll have many cookies that are once again in your browser that have absolutely nothing to do with the web site you visited.

Remember how all the unwanted garbage from annoying pop ads were destroying the net and driving people off the net?  I think the same thing is happening again with cookies and scripts.

There's got to be some way of configuring FF3 to block more of this garbage.  Anyone know how to configure FF3? a plugin?

What an annoyance, sheesh!

Ok, after messing around with this to see what happens.  I've found the following for me.

I can not no matter what I try rate skins using FF3 native mode or using IETab.

I can get IE7 to sometimes work to rate skins but, it means flusing 100% of everything from the browser.  This requires fresh logins and for quite awhile Google ads to show up.  I do not know of any action I can take to block the Google ads.

It right now takes too much effort on my part just to rate a skin!

The Google ads in the Forums eventually seem to go away on their own.  However, the almost always present Google Sponsor ad just below the Gallery is seldom not on the WC Home Page.  The WC Home Page sometimes is perfect but, only in IE7.

FF3 persists with issues.

I would gladly dump the browsers for accessing WC, if Stardock could build in WC access into Impulse.

I could easily see myself using Impulse exclusively for all my Stardock net needs.  Give me the full WC including the Forums and all settings, account access, and libraries and Impulse would win.  Especially if I could do everything without all these maintenance efforts to get site functions to work.

When this happens to me, I clear out the cookies, temp files and history.  Works everytime.  And yes, I need to relog in.

Correction I just found one method that allows me to rate using FF3.

1) Navigate to the library and skin I wish to rate.

2) Click on FF3 Tools and clear all cookies

3) Logoff WC will remain on same skin page

4) Login WC while still on same skin page

5) I will then be able to rate the skin with FF3.

6) I will continue to be able to rate skins with FF3 until I enter the WC Forums!!!

7) Once I have entered the WC Forums with FF3 I get the relentless and unstopable Google ads and I can no longer rate skins with FF3.

When this happens to me

Well that's just it, this isn't just some random inexplicable occurance.  It's caused.  See my above post.

I don't know anything about rating skins but I don't think I have any google ads so it is possible that my security settings prevent them from occuring. I block first and third party cookies and list wincustomize.com as an exception. Under "manage add-ons" I have disabled macromedia flash, which is your probable culprit. I also check use the IE7 pop-up blocker check off in addition to "pop-up stopper".

unfortunatly, some of the new WC features are flash driven and I need to use another browser (safari) when I choose or need to use flash. Of my daily surfing experience, I can see a use for flash of maybe 5% of the time? so I use IE7 95% of the time and safari 5%, that way I don't have to continually flush and reset, I just change which browser I'm using.

cheers

Thanks wimpy.  I'll give this a shot.  I can try using IE7 with tighter security settings for my main browser and then allow flash and other stuff in FF3 when those features are needed.
