PC? Speakers? Make a Screaming Sound

this has happened twice now.

Tuesday, August 26, 2008 by starkers | Discussion: Personal Computing

Just wondering if anybody might know why this would happen... twice now I've had this loud screaming sound (can't be sure if it's coming from the speakers or my PC, could be both) which lasts about 10 - 15 seconds.

There appears to be no damage afterwards as everything works as it should do, but I'm wondering if it may be something to do with the BOIS, CPU, etc, or whether it may be outside interference affecting my Logitech X-530 speaker system, being that I do hear pops and etc when other electricals are turned on and off.

Any thoughts, advice would be greatly appreciated.

Scratch my last statement Starkers. I looked up your X-530's and there's no on-board digital connection. If you like the sound of your Logitech speakers, the Z-5500's 505 watts (total RMS) will blow your roof off!

They're just plain scary! And most of all, they're cheap! Got mine off of eBay for $215 smackers over 2 years ago!

The THX Certified by Lucas Arts Z-5500's decoder controls my PC sound, TV, DVD w/ DTS, VCR, iPod and head phones, all at once. I don't play video games, but I have a sound connection for it if I ever want to.

Check 'em out and tell me what you think...

capacitors, when starting to fail, leak...when they leak they can emit a sound which could sound wail-ish We had that problem with a TV a couple of years ago.

Have no idea which capacitor could be causing that, but, if it is definitely coming from your speakers, maybe it's the speaker with the power regulator in it.

Normally I would say it's from your main computer power supply.

just a thought.

Bottom line CD and MP3's is digitized music and Logitech speakers are digital. You're cheating your ears playing digitized music with an analog connection on digital speakers.

Sadly, I'm stuck with analog output unless I use a coaxial cable from my card's digital output to an adapter that allows me to plug in the 3 speaker cables. However, I don't think that would give me true digital sound as I think the X-530's are analog.

Check 'em out and tell me what you think...

Yeah, they'd be sheer beauty hooked up to my rig (and DVD's, etc), but at $400 US (more in Oz dollars) they're a bit out of my price range at this time... I'd have to fore-go a few things (and why not, I could do to lose some weight) and save a while before I could invest in a set of Z-5500's. Very tempting, though... VERY, VERY tempting.

Now there's another distinct possibility... there were some strange noises here the other night... and that saucer shaped thing hovering over the house. Wow, fancy that, being the first pirate to gain the attention of aliens. Anybody got any messages they want passed on?

"Shoot somebody else."

Seriously, I got this picture of this discussion going on over a game of poker. Yes, I know I'm strange.

I certainly hope it's not a capacitor on the blink! Thing is, since I checked all the connections and settings, the screeching has not returned... yet, so hopefully the issue has been resolved and will not return.

Another "I hope not"... being my PSU is relatively new. It's still under warranty but I don't really want all the hassle of going through manufacturer repairs/replacements, etc cos they can take a while... and my PC and I are practically joined at the hip.

I realise that I'm going to get some pops and outside interference via analog speakers, but it's so infrequence since doing all that maintenance that it's not such a big issue. There again, if it ends up pissing me off enough, I can go back to my Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital 5600's via the card's digital output.... which mightn't be a bad idea seeing as they kick some serious butt, sound-wise.

What about the anal probes?

I've already put in my request that they restrict those to politicians... suggesting an enema prior to the procedure cos they're mostly full of sh!t and hot 'air".

I know absolutely NOTNING much about computer internal workings.  But I will tell you I had a few very loud screeche's on my laptop before my whole sound system went out.  This happened when it wabout 3 years old.  And that was about 1 1/2 years ago.  The as computer still works pretty  good but the sound it gone.  I have had a few people take a look at it but they say I would have to get a whole new mother board which I won't do.  So I hope you are not having that kind of problem.  I guess my fan doesn't cool enough and it burnt out the sound card.   Good luck with it Stackers..

Uh, oh!!! I just start feeling comfortable and begin to breath again, and you tell me that! looks like I had best not put away the oxygen mask and tranquilizers just yet, then.

Sorry to hear about your woes... however, you might not have to replace your motherboard to get back sound. You should be able to pick up a relatively cheap sound card and install that instead.

Mine is a separate sound card that I installed myself, but it cost quite a bit more than my motherboard so I'm praying it's OK. I've not heard the screech since I fiddled around with the connections and settings, so let's hope that fixed it.

That's what I was trying to tell you my friend, I didn't pay the full retail price for my set. I found mine at eBay (NIB) for $215.

If I had to pay $400 bucks, I wouldn't have bought them, I would have gone with Klipsch or Bose for that kind of money. But the cold part is that these top brands aren't as versatile and can't integrate as much as the Z-5500s.

Check out these deals and you'll see them as low as $169 US on eBay and for $209 at TigerDirect.

Considering the high-end sound card you're running, when you do get this speaker set, you'll thank me.

Thanks Cp, but my problem there would be shipping/insurance costs to Oz + Customs duties... those would most likely bump the over-all cost to what I'd have to pay locally.

However, I have checked out some local retailers and a few have the Z-5500's for around AUD$300.00, which works out to be about USD$254.00.... so give or take, the prices are roughly equivalent to US prices. One place in Sydney has them for AUD$269.00 (with shipping to Ipswich it would cost me around $290 ish), and another in Brisbane for $279.00... so I'd probably go with those as I could bring them home myself the same day and save 10 bucks... less 3 for train fare.

Yup, they are a definite future investment, but first I gotta get us a washing machine... mrs starkers is tired of taking the washboard down to the creek every day. Seriously, our current one is 12 years old (they don't build 'em to last any more) and isn't doing a good job any more... not to mention it doesn't stop filling with water these days and has to be attended to prevent overflows.... soap suds all through the house.

Anyhow, thanks again for the heads up... and finding me another way to spend money.

Great way to clean the floors. And as it has already been established that men can't drive a vacuum, it's easier than getting them to try.

Not when you've got carpet throughout... and the water doesn't drain away cos there's concrete floors underneath. Nope, me thinks 'white' water rafting is an outdoor sport.

Oh I can drive one orright... I just didn't hit the brakes hard enough the day I bumped my puter.

Ahhhhh, get her a new stick and a bigger rock!

What?  A quality spanking is one thing, but have her throw the rock at me/beat me with the stick?  No thanks! Me thinks I'll stick with plan A and get the washing machine.

Plan B was to get the Z-5500's anyway and send her down the laundromat with a couple of washers on string (so's she could keep re-using 'em)... but that plan flew right out the window when she said that I'd have to carry the washing there and wait 'til it was done to bring it home again.  Aw shucks, I thought, what's the point of having a new toy if I'm hardly at home to play with it....

Plan C was to save money to get the Z-5500's quicker by getting her a hamster powered washer - you know, with a hamster in one of those wheels turning the tub, etc - but Animal Welfare nipped that in the bud... so plan A it is.
