Testing the beta

Tuesday, August 26, 2008 by Philly0381 | Discussion: Fences

Whoops, didn't even figure that I would be the first post.

Had no problem downloading and getting Fences to open.

Menus look very nice and clean, informative with just enough info.

No problems with moving the Fences around or resizing them.

I was at a slight disadventage since I don't have a desktop with lots or even a few icons.  Lets see there is the trash bin and then the Fences icon and, that's it.

I did notice that it doesn't play nice with a couple of programs, Stardock Virtual Desktop, woundn't show the different wallpapers by desktop (cleared up with uninstalling).  Right Click doen't show the options for Fences.  Not sure if there are others.

Unless I just couldn't see it, it saw no way to close or shut down Fences.

Understanding that this is a side project, what is the estimated time for the beta and when will updates be issued?

I can see how this would or could be usefull to what you might call power users, programmers/developers or possibly even skinners.  Some my say you could use ObjectDock Plus for this also.  I think though the agrument could me made that ObjectDock Plus would be for more permanent items while Fences would be utilized for the short term projects that people would be working on.

Now comes the question if I would use Fences, probably not, but that does not mean that it doesn't have the potential to become a popular desktop management tool.

Looking forward to reading others comments.

Got a beta invite a few weeks ago and must say that I love this program.  My one suggestion would be to include the ability to justify the icons inside a particular fence (e.g. center all icons, instead of the default left justify).

<<Since I installed the latest beta (v0.92.708) I have been facing some issues with Deskscapes' (v2.50.068) dynamic dreams (specially the master liquid dream). I am experimenting regular Windows explorer lockups that locks either one (fences or Deskscapes). When fences got struck the fences around the icons will not be painted and double clicking on the desktop will not hide them, they just blink and reappear. On the other hand, when Deskscapes got struck, fences render properly but the animated wallpaper freezes. This situation is alleviated (or at least does not occur frequently) when static dreams are configured to play in Deskscapes.

I have restarted the computer several times but it seems to be a problem between dynamic dreams & fences.>>

I have experienced the same problem. My final solution was to not run any dreams.

System is Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5881, 64bit Athlon Turion which Toshiba was unkind enough to put Vista home premium 32bit on. ATI Radeon 3100, 3GB ram

It seems that there is no way to turn fences off other than uninstall. With it running, even when it is double-clicked and invisible, does it provide a load to hinder my graphics card at all?

Thanks - Mark

To disable fences without uninstalling; right click desktop and choose edit fences, open tools tab, click on more tools in the lower left corner and you'll find a clickbox to enable/disable fences...

I suppose it could be more visible...

Oh btw... If the issue only happens more frequently, rather than disappear entirely, chances are that fences has absolutely nothing to do with the problem.

Probably has nothing to do with fences however.

I have a dual head display(two screens o1-o2).

I have under this user one fence on monitor 2.

When I play a full screen game on monitor 1 then the fence on monitor2,

resizes, and moves,  when game is closed then it returns to normal.

I feel that this has to do with the reset of screen res on monitor1, and then returning norm res

when game closes.

I think you're right.

Wow!  I just received v0.95.851 Beta, and it does exactly what I've been wishing for (for at least a couple of years!!!!!).  My attempted solution was to create a desktop image with different colored squares to help me manage all my programs and files, but it didn't work too well since I'm running two monitors--so I gave up.  Fences is great!

One question:  I can't find the "More Tools" option which is mentioned in these posts, supposedly at the bottom of the customize menu.  Any ideas?

One suggestion:  I have 17 fences on my dual monitor setup.  Many of them have a whole bunch of shortcuts/icons in them, and in order to get them all to fit on the desktop, the fences are sized to show only the top row.  (You should have seen my desktop before Fences!)  It would be fantastic if one could expand the fence by clicking on an enlarge button on the title bar.  Right now the only way I can view all the shortcuts in a given fence is to use the scroll bar, or drag the bottom of the fence down.  Ideally, enlarging the fence would expand it down (keeping the width) or up if it's at the bottom of the screen.  To do this, though, it would need to move the selected fence to the front of all the other fences and also make it opaque.

Again, this is an awesome tool, and Kudos to you for coming up with it!

It can be found under the 'Tools' menu:

Just installed the new beta. Works great for me except for the dual monitor wallpaper issue discussed in another thread.

Just wanted to chime in!

Thanks for a great product

bangwow - XP or Vista? Change the background color...of fences? Or of your desktop. If fences, try playing with all of the different sliders, changing both the saturation and the brightness

Thanks, JMB1984. I forgot to change the brightness when I tried to change the background color of fences, it works now.

Again, thanks for your help!
