New Installation

Saturday, June 21, 2008 by Frankief | Discussion: Object Desktop

I have purchased a new computer. How do I obtain and install Object Desktop? I am current on my subscription. And if anyone knows, how can I transfer my email and settings from the old system to the new one?

Install Impulse, enter in your email and serial information, and you should be able to install the programs.

What email program were you using?

should be Outlook OR Outlook Express
I'd recommend Outlook if you have it.
The first time you open it, Outlook should ask you for following for a pop3 account....

your name (as you want people to see it)
your email address (this is what you tell people to send you email at)
your email password (this is the password you need to get your email from your ISP)
the pop3 server address for your ISP
the smtp server address for you ISP

you can probably get all the info from your ISP including your password with a phone call.

For backing up email, this is what I do (not sure if it's the "preferred" method, but it's what works for me):

Open Outlook (this is on 2003) > File > Import and Export > Export to file > Personal folder file (pst) > then select the folder/item you want to back up (inbox/read/sent/calendar/contact etc) > Next > I usually name them according to what they are, and the date I exported it (example: Outlook sent backup 6-21-08.pst) and save it wherever (my docs is good). Then, when you want to put them into the new install, use the same method, but choose File > import and export > import from another program or file > personal folder file (pst) then browse to the previous files you saved (might need to put them on a disc or thumb drive).

I've had to do numerous formats/reinstalls and this has always worked without issue.

Thanks for the comments. I did get my Object Desktop installed but even with a fresh install am still having the activation issues with IP. I have and use the email backup tool but didn't know how to get the info into the new install of Office. I have purchased Laplink to try and move all of my pertinent stuff over to the "New Nellie" but just got her set up today and the hour is late so it will wait until tomorrow. Boy howdy is she fast! I am in computer heaven for now!
