Pro tools?

Me and a friend like to play music together. We record with Pro Tools Version 6.1 on an MBox, yet have always had trouble. He wants to get a new computer to run it. Does anyone know what would be the best selection for optimum performance would be? Please advise...Thanks

Having a kick-ass computer is not really necessary (but it sure is nice)

The only suggestion I would make is if you go with a digital recorder make sure it's a firewire connection or better. I personally like the Creative Labs E-MU hardware ($500) but there's a lot available and you can spend thousands if you want.

I use a dual core 3.4 pentium Jack. 2 gigs of ram.
Software I use is Live 7.0 from Ableton WWW Link along with a Creative X-fi Elite-Pro w\ an external interface. Works ok for me, I have no latency problems when monitoring.
What problems are you having?

Thanks everyone...John, definitely having latency probs...Program stops running during recording and/or Playback

Latency can only be solved with a decent soundcard, what kind do you have? Have you tried lowering the latency in the sound cards control panel?
M-audio has a good selection of external sound card solutions for home recording. I used one of their cards.. 99 bucks.. before I bought my X-fi. It worked well.
Audio being dropped and scratchy playback is typically due to trying to record and simultaneously playback too many tracks. It is also dependent on your processor so a PC upgrade may also be something you may need to do if you plan on doing any serious recording. Audio is very processor intensive and most times a good PC is neccesary for a smoother audio experience.
One advantage Ableton live offers is the abilty to "freeze" tracks that you dont need to edit therefore removing any extra processing that track may be using and freeing it up for other areas. Rather handy.

Thanks for your help John...I actually have Reason and Ableton Live. Both of which came with Pro Tools
