I'm never installing Impulse ever again

I am glad it worked for someone else too!  I uninstalled Impulse myself.  Things were working fine until then...

I too have this problem.  It is just completely amazing.  I don't have a restore point I can go to and I don't have the time to do a reinstall of Vista.  I guess I can try the Stardock Central method.  I don't really care for Impulse, anyway; that is assuming I can even get it to load.

Yeah, I guess I'm joining the party too.

I have a computer (Windows XP Service Pack 3) with IP installed (version 2.5 I think). After rebuilding the cache and repairing the icon images, I uninstalled IP so I can install an newer version of IP. All of my icons were fine after the installation.

However, when I installed a newer version of IP, (version 4.1), ALL of my icons changed into blank ones. When I tried applying a package, only the basic Windows icons changed (ie. folder icons), everything else remained blank INCLUDING: my Office 2007 icons, all installed programs' icons, EVERYTHING basically.

From here, I tried repairing the icon images and rebuilding the cache, and nothing happened. Then I uninstalled IP again and NOTHING HAPPENED AGAIN! So basically I have a computer whose icons can't be seen except for the folders, thus making navigation on my computer VERY difficult.

Finally, after doing a system restore (by using Windows' system restore tool to go back to an earlier time), my icons returned to normal, but with the old IP installed on it.

Is there anyway I can upgrade my IP program without destroying my icons??

I had this problem after removing IP on Vista using Impulse

went to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex

Deleted the whole IconHandler key

Either kill explorer.exe or restart.

Boom, fixed.

For problems like this I recomend trying  Analog's suggestion. This is also a small program for removing the software from your system. Once you uninstall the IconPackager you will need to reinstall through Impulse. Make sure that you restart your machine afrer the uninstall and BEFORE you run the software again.

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have taken the liberty and time out of my day to provide a detailed walk through on how to retrieve your long-lost icons. Many of you (by the hundreds) are suffering of the painful annoyance that comes with uninstalling IconPackager.

Issue: When uninstalling IconPackager all or the majority of my icons go/are blank. See figure 1

Solution: Download and run the fix provided by Stardock Corp.

Solution Explained:

1. Since you have already un-installed IconPackager, you must re-install it. Simply grab the free trial from CNET (http://www.download.com/IconPackager/3000-2195_4-10031210.html?tag=mncol&cdlPid=10893658)
2. Once IconPackager is installed, download the fix provided by Stardock and save to your desktop (http://sd.stardock.com/mike/apps/odnt_zapper.exe).
3. Go to your desktop and run the "odnt_zapper.exe" file just downloaded. Refer to [Figure 2]

1. Check the small box next to "IconPackager" and click "Apply". Refer to [Figure 3]

1. You will be prompted with 2 warnings. The first will be a "cleanup" warning asking if you are sure you want to delete everything [Figure 4]. Select [YES] and ignore it. After you select yes, you will receive an error saying you must re-install. Ignore this error and select [OK].

1. Click on [OK] and exit the program.
2. By now, your icons should have all came back to normal. Not only are your icons back to normal, but your IconPackager is now officially uninstalled.

I hope my fix was helpful and you are able to utilize it.

I am simply going to chime in with this other fix. If the above fix does not work (which it should), another way to retrieve your icons back is by manually resetting them. This may be a tedious task, however it is still quicker and more effective then reformatting/system restore.

To do this follow these simply steps:

1. Right click on the icon that is not displaying properly.
2. Select "properties"
3. Select "change icon"
4. Click on "OK"
5. Click on "Apply"
6. Click on "OK"

You may think I missed a step and failed to desribe what you do when you are in the 'change icon' menu, however I did not. By default the icon will be there and already selected, therefor there is no need to select or change aynthing.

Thank you for taking the time explaining the fix. But the problem is still with Stardock lack of fixing the bug.

Stardock will never get another dime from me. It's not all their fault though. If you want to customize your system then stop using Windows, use Linux. I run Vista/Ubuntu dual boot. My windows partition is storage mainly, I only use it for Photoshop now (sorry GIMP fans, it's just not the same) otherwise I do everything else in Linux now and just store my music and movies in the windows drive. My Ubuntu desktop is killer, and far better than anything you can do with the help of Stardock, and your system resources are not gobbled up unnecessarily. Abandon Microsoft and Stardock for your own good.

I had the same problems and reinstalled Vista as I had not seen "the fix" and it was time to clear the clutter anyway.

However I'd just like to ask Stardock if the uninstaller routine for Iconpackager using Impulse has been updated so that default icons can be set and will remain if Iconpackager is uninstalled?

so, how come stardock still hasn't fixed this bug?  only 6 months of complaining here, i don't get it

i really wish stardock would get their stupid act together, problems with several applications not working, cursorFX/XP i've been working with support for over a year, same as IP, and instead of fixing the program, they just keep releasing new versions with new features, which still have the same damn bugs.  i'm so sick of going through email support, which if they respond, is usually after a month when i come on here and bitch about it, then, eventually they just stop responding again.  seriously, i finally got the stardock tech phone number, i'm going to start calling daily until they fix the stuff thats been broken for years

Thought I would add to this. I had iconpackager working super. Well I had to install Vista 64 new. Iconpackager is the only thing NOT working. The second I install it ALL my icons show up like a blank page. If I uninstall it all my Icons are back. So I tried another install with Vista 64 sp2 for fun on another partion. Same thing happen again. There is NOTHING new I installed everything is just like I used to have it.. I am at a loss. Yes I have tried everything to get them all back.

Also when running iconpackager I cant see any of the packages.

Stardock can you PLEASE look into this.

Is this fixed now?

As of today, version impulse 3.14.351 (Images:3.12.212)(Build 975) it is not fixed yet. Just tried to uninstall Icon Packager v4.20.178 from my Vista installation and the same crap again.
