Hyperdesk

by The Skins Factory

Sunday, April 13, 2008 by messiah1 | Discussion: Customization Software

So with Hyperdesk just around the corner, is this finally some competition for WindowBlinds?  How well will TSF and Stardock play together?  I know TSF used to contribute here, but they don't show up much anymore, at least with content.  I'm anxiously awaiting the release and can't wait to see DarkMatter.  Hurry up Jeff.

What are your thoughts?

*UPDATE:  Hyperdesk is live.  Go check it out and leave your constructive  comments about it here.  (Notice I didn't say "only leave your good comments or bash it".  Constructive comments can be positive or negative but should be supported with facts.)

People are free here to voice their opinions and complaints about Stardock products.

I dont hear any complaining about Stardock products, All I "hear" (or read for that matter) is the same thing posted by the same people 30 times in the exact same manor, voicing your opinion is one thing but when you post the exact same thing 10 times it gets repetitive fast.

No good comes from these arguments, its happened with VS vs. WB (And Hyperdesk visual styles are more or less a strict adaptation of the standard visual style), so why don't we just end it with; To each his own.
Everyone seems so intent on bashing one another, pick one to use and move on?

Well said. This thread wasn't started as a Hyperdesk problem thread. It wasn't started as a Hyperdesk bashing thread. It was started to have a mature discussion about Hyperdesk, the newest way to skin your desktop. People are entitled to their opinions. I have both WB and Hyperdesk on my PC. After using the Sony theme for a bit, I switched back to WB. I don't have one of the pay themes. I have no opinion on them. Lets try to keep this an un-bashing thread or you know Zoomba will be in here with his get some stick to close it.

Sometimes it's a good idea to take the advice you give... like now for instance!

ZubaZ admits to being a hack and has always been surprised anyone downloads his stuff.  He makes it for himself and then shares.

no Vista hyperdesk anytime soon.

It looks like that choice was made for me already.
Not that I'd want to try it anyway.WB6 is stable and reliable ,I'll stick with what works for me.
I dont hear any complaining about Stardock products,

That was a general reference to the forums,in which you will find an occasional complaint.
A company that listens to it's critics shuts them up by improving the products or services.
A company that censors it's critics just shuts them up.

People complain about and report and suggest features for Stardock and many other company's apps in these forums.  Hyperdesk is teh newk id on the block and will be compared.  It's natural nad good.

Open discussion topics:
  1. Artistic merit - very subjective - interesting but un-win-able
  2. Completeness of skinning - VS vs. WB  . .. been done but can still be interesting
  3. Required completeness - very subjective . . why bother
  4. Marketing - subjective . . but with facts available to support
Pointless discussion topics:
  1. "Hyperdesk sucks"
  2. "Windowblinds sucks"
  3. "Zubaz can't type"
  4. "MikeB's Old Republic skin is the baddest mo' fo' around

Guess I'll jump in here... as someone who started designing .msstyles seven years ago and designing Windowblinds skins within the last few years, I have seen a lot changes in the "skinning" world. I design for both .msstyles and Windowblinds, and always will.

I have tried several products for applying .msstyles and even the UXTHEME.DLL patch. Of course none of them ever came close to the capabilities that StyleXP had in the .msstyles world before its demise (not compatible with XP SP3).

A quality product was definitely needed for users who wish to continue use the .msstyles format and stay with Windows XP, and Hyperdesk is a first attempt at filling that need, I admire the creators for that.

While it lacks a lot of the features that StyleXP had, I am certain it will improve in the future. It is ture that it will never have all the abilities of Windowblinds because of its patching the UXTHEME.DLL in memory, but I do not think it was ever intended to compete with it. So arguing that Windowblinds is better than Hyperdesk is like the old arguments when people would compare StyleXP to Windowblinds. It is a moot point at this stage, there is no need to compare products, each is designed to fill different user needs.

The interface in Hyperdesk is in fact very well done and easy to use, and while I do agree that the Sony Ericsson and possibly other themes are lacking in design/quality in some areas, the product itself holds merit.

I applaud any company that attempts to enter the skinning world with a new product, and many have done so over the years and died out since, but lets give credit where credit is due.

Windowblinds is an excellent product, Hyperdesk I am sure will be too. I mean, I don't think anyone ever mentioned products that can apply .msstyles like Auslogic's Visual Styler, or TuneUp Softwares Styler2, which are both XP and Vista compatible here at WC when they were released, so why talk so much about Hyperdesk?

I really look forward to the possibility of Hyperdesk replacing products like StyleXP among others, and I hope to see its capabilities expand in the future, and go on to Windows Vista. I also hope to see software released that will allow for creating .msstyles for Vista.

I am a skinner, I support all companies that aid me in my design work, and I do not complain or ridicule any of them. I just try to design for them all, for without them there would be no way at all for my work to be seen. Maybe we should all try this humble philosophy?

I use it Zubaz, but it is not perfect yet either. I mentioned a few problems to Neil a few weeks ago that I hope get cleared up soon.

It was formatted Bebi, but like many things here at the WC forums, some things just do not work right all the time.

Yeah I had a feeling. I never have a problem through FF though, I think it's an issue with sdc/impulse/wcbrowser, whatever.

I upload my stuff on here , and you can ask around. I'm the last guy to hype my own stuff.

Most people on here probably have heard me utter

"I'm not a skinner , I just play one on the Internet" at one time or another.
