Hyperdesk

by The Skins Factory

Sunday, April 13, 2008 by messiah1 | Discussion: Customization Software

So with Hyperdesk just around the corner, is this finally some competition for WindowBlinds?  How well will TSF and Stardock play together?  I know TSF used to contribute here, but they don't show up much anymore, at least with content.  I'm anxiously awaiting the release and can't wait to see DarkMatter.  Hurry up Jeff.

What are your thoughts?

*UPDATE:  Hyperdesk is live.  Go check it out and leave your constructive  comments about it here.  (Notice I didn't say "only leave your good comments or bash it".  Constructive comments can be positive or negative but should be supported with facts.)

They probably just replaced the image on their server without renaming it (my guess). That is unless one of the sneaky mods did it.

It's also been around A LOT longer, if HyperDesk was around for the amount of time lets say ThemeManager was then they'd have thousands to choose from as well.

Wrong. The two are very different. Hyperdesk is about buying themes from the Skins Factory. Object Desktop is about enabling users to apply stuff made by anyone.

Even if it were an apt comparison, it would still not matter. One has 1000s of free themes and the other has 1.

A better comparison would be Mycolors and Hyperdesk.

And seriously now.....who the hell doesn't "Hype" they're stuff around here? And I don't mean just WC or Stardock. Everyone always thinks/claims they have the next best thing.

Please show me an instance of someone hyping their unrelease skins for a year before release? The more you hype, the better you have to deliver.

How is that wrong? You are comparing one program thats been around for YEARS to another program thats been around for what... a week?

Even if you where to compare the two, how much longer has MyColors been around?

I dont hear any complaining about Stardock products,

you should read the comments after every mycolors theme release. complaints that there's 'only' 100 icons or complaints that they think there should be more gadgets. from what i see, hyperdesk is getting off easy.

I think SOME people around here are forgetting all the things the CEO of Skins Factory has publicly said over the past year such as how Stardock has no QA, how Stardock's artists suck, how buggy WindowBlinds is, how ugly MyColors themes are, and so on.

So after almost a year of that Hyperdesk finally comes out and it turns out to be a handful of icons, a media player and an msstyle file. Hyperdesk wasn't just hyped up for a year, it tore down others while it was trying to build itself out. The WinMatrix threads were very telling. Their CEO deleted most of his more offensive comments but there's still enough here and there.

The interface in Hyperdesk is in fact very well done and easy to use, and while I do agree that the Sony Ericsson and possibly other themes are lacking in design/quality in some areas, the product itself holds merit.

I applaud any company that attempts to enter the skinning world with a new product, and many have done so over the years and died out since, but lets give credit where credit is due.

Windowblinds is an excellent product, Hyperdesk I am sure will be too. I mean, I don't think anyone ever mentioned products that can apply .msstyles like Auslogic's Visual Styler, or TuneUp Softwares Styler2, which are both XP and Vista compatible here at WC when they were released, so why talk so much about Hyperdesk?

Because Tune Up and Styler 2's ceos didn't go around the net trashing Stardock or WindowBlinds. They didn't go around to skin sites across the net posting endless "teasers". They don't put up mock up screenshots that look fantastic and then fail to deliver on them.

It is called back lash.

Because Hyperdesk and Object Desktop don't set out to do the same things.

Even if you where to compare the two, how much longer has MyColors been around?

About a year and a half I think. It has tons of themes already. I read the CEO of Skins Factory refer to MyColors themes as 'mediocre' and then they release the Sony ericson theme which is weaker than any premium skin I've seen. Why shouldn't I just get a uxtheme patch, go to studio28.com and download the great visual styles there for free? or go to Deviantart and get great visuals styles there?

I guess my question is what all the hype was about? what is the point of hyperdesk at all? I understand the idea of Mycolors better even if I think Mycolors justification of existing is not super strong. But at least with Mycolors I can go find my favorite sports team or college and have it as my desktop and its a very complete experience. Or I can buy Object desktop for $50 and get thousands of themes. But hyperdesk is way behind in what it can do and isn't likely to get better and it only hopes to provide themes that i could get for free. Who cares about disney themes. I can go out and download a free visual style from deviantart and apply one of the thousands of disney wallpapers on the net. Why would I pay for that?

I'm not against hyperdesk. I am questioning what point it has at all. It was hyped for a year and so I was expecting something a lot more.

And you got the Wall-E and Disney theme

So the CEO might be a douchebag, but we all are at some point in our lives.
I still like the look of the hyperdesk themes Well... apart from the toolbars... eugh..

And its not gonna deter me from buying it when it is vista compatible.

Using technology that's how old? For an aging,on it's way out OS,that may be fine.No offense to XP users intended but Vista is what new computers come with, like it or not.A NEW program that only works with OLD systems is pretty damn lame, imho.
The Vista solution should have been in place at launch but by the time it is,hyperdesks shortcomings should be obvious. We'll see.
