strange error....

this shot was taken of my startmenu and the little explorer box is missing half of the magnifying icon... any idea why this happens? i have moved the box over so it fits in with my skin........

Color of the 'All Programs' mouseover is set by the Menu Higthlight. The All Programs background is set by your windows background color. Also the left side of vista start menus should be wider so you can actually read the items pretty well.
The search box should be moveable according to the margins, if this is not working try a different size setting for bottom bar. Though I have fixed this problem in the past by adjusting margins, I don't know why this does not seem to be working for you. Search results from that box should align to the left and fit in the same section the all programs menu does. The mouseover for those items will be the same as the start menu item button/mouseover just like the all programs menu mouseover is.
Vistas 'user icon background' is default and can not be changed (yet, maybe someday).

all progs menu is the wrong color...it looks like the classic button face color...can it be set different than the button color?

Text on the search results isnt centered on the mouseover.Sits low...looks like shit.

User icon background dosnt work.

Underlining isnt the problem tho it dosnt help when aligning text to LOOK good.This areas text is sitting low on the icon(which is centered)This is a Vista screwup but it does bring out a WB limitation...content margins in WB sometimes do nothing(ask a visual styler how often that happens...never is what I was told...if you adjust a content margin,text moves)

If I'm using WB to skin windows...IT NEEDS to take control of this stuff...not let windows dictate how this looks.Isnt that the whole idea?

ok I tried to 'duplicate' the 'error' but nothing I do causes the searchbox text and/or icon to 'relocate' to an odd position. I tried moving text margins for the bottom bar, the top bar and everwhere. I tried resizing the bar, nothing. I tried even changing the start menu item mouseover margins and still nothing. For whatever reason I just can't 'cause' this error now for anything :/
Changing the 'Search Box Horz/Vert Offset" does work to move the searchbox and buttons as a whole, but thats about it.
The searchbox noraml state color is defined by the windows background color.
The 'All Programs' menu background color is defined by the 'Button Face / Dialog Background' color.

In SKS6 go to "Change Skin Colours" > Show me the skin defined system colours > Window background
works here every time for me ~shrug~

I had the same problem with the search box. Seems that a minimum size (height) of the bottom bar is definitely needed for a correct placement of it´s content otherwise they are forced downwards (text margins don´t do anything here...).
And for the annoying hunt for "which color is used here again" I made some simple skin where I used totally ugly but characteristic colors for each system color to find out which is which. That helped a lot.
Maybe we should publish a list of colors used in certain sections (or better some screenshot) (I made one for me for Vista Explorer)

It can be a little confusing...some things dont seem to change the first apply,or even the second...sometimes edited images dont change when applied...seems like SKS is slow to recognize changes sometimes.

Your actually better off shutting down and restarting explorer.exe via task manager. I need to do it about every 10 applys when using Skinstudio. Things start to get borked up if you go too long. Restarting explorer.exe gets things back to smooth...for another 10 apply or so.

Correct
If you look closely, you'll see that the text is underlined. I have come to believe that that that text is hard coded in the OS (I went through Modify Vista part fonts and changed every underlined font one by one without it having any affect on this section)
ugly, huh?
I've tried all the newer Vista skins that I have......all have the same issue.
Annoying how you can't change the background so it matches your skin.
I believe you'll have to blame Microsoft for most of these issues, though not Niel
