ObjectDock 2.0 any time soon?

Seriously, when was the last update?

Friday, April 11, 2008 by Aeon-Slayer | Discussion: ObjectDock

Ok, so i'm just wondering when OD is going to see 2.0? I have VERY few problems with the current OD (running on XP in tandem with WindowsBlinds -- Plus Version) but there is one feature that is SERIOUSLY missing:

that is the ability to drag files/folders/links, etc INTO a "Flyout Menu" !! that annoys me so much!! You have go into the fly out menu and then manually add the files, what a pain! Just model 2.0 off of the new OSX dock -- that thing works well.

In Example for the above, i want a flyout menu called "recent projects" or something like that, where i can drag in files and such of recent projects, but as is now i have to creat a whole TAB to do that!! i don't really like that at all.

The other (less major) problem is the lack of a link to "My Network Places"...? whats with that? i tried to import it using the shortcuts option, but it isn't possible.

Oh, and another MAJOR thing is the complete lack of DECENT docklets! who wants to know what the weather is!? give me a WORKING RSS reader anyday (i use Yahoo! widgets for my RSS only now!). i have searched the web but havn't found any good third party docklets, so if someone could steer me in the right direction? or are there seriously NO good docklets?

Anyway, could someone please get back to me with facts about the reality of 2.0 (or above) / opinions about my ideas? Thanks

Question. What happened to 1.95 that fixes vista 64-bit problems?1.95 was in the coming soon page but now its removed, and ive been waiting months. anyone?

Apparently there are people who have it running on Vista 64-bit so you're pretty much on your own there because it works for some but not others. Nobody knows when next stable OD is coming. Considering it's not on Coming Soon page I'd take that as a sign that nothing new will be around for at least 6 months so just swallow that "please wait" medication and wash it down with some "OD isn't the only project we're working on at the moment" and hopefully everything should be ok...NOT!

It depends on the time frame, and the price, and on whether I'm interested in the new features or just the bug fixes.

Time frame = more than 6 months at least
Price = probably upgrade will set you back $15 unless you've bought it in the past 6 months or so.
New features = unlikely in the next release, because they are still trying to iron out the bugs.

Oh no! You aren't serious, are you?

I just bought ObjectDock a few days ago. I had no idea they were doing to make another version so soon.

I really can't justify paying AGAIN for this so soon. I've noticed a handful of bugs in ObjectDock, and I'm not paying to get them fixed!

It is a brilliant little dock, and I enjoy using it. Will I really have to pay for it again to stay up-to-date?

It would be like having just bought a Windows 95 computer, and they release Windows 98, except that there are probably only going to be bug fixes in this 2.0 release.

I knew I shouldn't have paid for this.

Wow, that made more sense in my head than it does on the page;)

Will recent customers be spared this extra cost?

Typically if you are a recent purchaser of one version the upgrade is free or discounted.

Please post you bugs in a new post here.  We, the community will try to help and if we can't they can be escalated to Stardock support.

OD+ is a great app as it stands.  Let's work on your problems and go from there.  OD+ 2 may end up having no features you need/want and isn't even a concern.

Excellent:)
That's very good of you.

Are there any specific details at the moment? I mean, is there some kind of purchase threshold where people are regarded as recent buyers? Perhaps each case is decided separately.

I apologize if I'm causing hassle;)

Yep, as long as you bought in the past 6-9 months probably. The issue here is that 6-9 months ago OD was and is still at version 1.9 stable. So I'm guessing that that time frame will be extended to incorporate all people who bought 1.9, so they will get a free upgrade. Those who got 1.5 when they opened their wallet, like me, will have to splash the cash again.

Technically, you shouldn't have to pay to have bugs fixed. Software should work 100% out of the box and if it doesn't then devs need to take care of stuff for free.

Judging by the number of bugs that have accumulated from latest stable release, a beta and a new alpha, the devs will have their hands busy for quite some time. In fact, I'll even have the audacity to predict that by this time next year there won't be OD+ 2.0. At least, not a version that would work 100%, a beta maybe but not a stable release. Things keep piling up for Stardock and it's difficult to see them coming out of this rout any time soon.

The situation is quite desperate to say the least. Those who are on a stable release and having problems are advised to check out the beta and then told to try out the alpha if things aren't working. However, beta and alpha have some bugs in them already and then people are told to go back to stable release. Things are stuck in a vicious circle. I never came across such situation with any other bit of software I ever used...

I just paid For 1.9.
There is no way i am Paying for 2.0.
If i have to pay for 2.0 i am going to go spare.
I will start to search torrents. .

I think if you have a version of 1.9 Plus you should not have to pay for 2.0.

Oh who gives a shit. Just pay for it. "NO" I said i would Not "oh Of course yo will.

No "Oh well just go and buy a MAC and get all these pretty little looking gozmos any way.

Yeah F&^* it I am going to get a MAC. "i hear Leopard OSX 10.5.1 Os Really Cool.

Gees Microsoft aint gonna like this. Why an affiliate turning Windows users off so bad that they go over to MAC OSX. No i supppose microsoft will not like this. No We dont.

Oh well stiff.

If I have to pay for it Its just an extra cost ontop of it all and that breaks the camels back if you add it all up you would be better of if you buy MAC OSX 10.5.1

WOW. messiah1 wonders how much heartache and retarded posts would be spared if people would only read the ENTIRE flippin' thread before they post stupid comments like this one...Proof that he didn't read the entire thread...

Guys....it pays to read an entire thread as often the information you angst over is already given.

Suggestions re searching torrents is all very well ...'in jest'...but note that not only is warez likely to trash your system via artifact or design [or both] it is not acceptable on Wincustomize.com....

That's answered in the replies above!

Some other general comments:

i realize that there is A LOT of work going into this, but i really think having at least a less broken fly-out menu would be enough of an edition.

The flyout isn't "broken" - it just doesn't have a particular feature. It's working as designed from that POV.

The other (less major) problem is the lack of a link to "My Network Places"...? whats with that? i tried to import it using the shortcuts option, but it isn't possible.

I can't vouch for Vista, but with XP SP2 & SP3 you just drag the "My Network Places" desktop icon to the dock (tabbed im my case).

They never fix bugs they ignore them like the tab always on top bug. some times a dock stays on top even when it is not checked.

It has been in every version of OD and no one fixes it. They say it will be fix in 2.0 but, I doubt it.

The bugs are not being ignored.  The developer is aware of the issue and it's on the list of things to be looked at.  There is only so much time in the world.

So, why do they waste it developing software like Impulse when they had a perfectly functional Stardock Central?

Impulse has a function . .you may just not agree with it.

This has been discussed to death in other threads, but in a nutshell: large archive support (pretty important for new games), increased security, a more manageable code base, better external publisher support (TBD) and a few other things.

In any case, you can still use Stardock Central for everything ODNT.
