Disabling Aero Effects

I'm working with Vista on my computer and I much prefer the look of windowblinds schemes, but while I'm using an art program by the name of FireWorks MX I get severe lag while the Windows Aero settings are enabled. this wasn't a problem before windowblinds as I just disabled those settings. well I'd do the same again but now I don't know how 
can anyone tell me where the settings for this are? in either windowblinds or skinstudio.
and for the record, i did search for this answer first but didn't see anything in the search. sorry if this is a common question and I'm just blind.

is it really necessary to stop it in windows itsself when it's just a windowblinds setting?

Well, you could try going to the System Info tab of WB and checking "never use per-pixel borders on a skin," but I don't think that would help you since that leaves the DWM on.

well, it helped a bit, but it wasn't quite what I needed apparently

I just went and disabled the desktop manager you suggested and it did exactly what I needed, despite seeming a little over-the-top. either way, thanks!
